Monopods - for mobile use

Tripods are an indispensable tool for photography. They reduce the strain on the photographer, which is particularly important when using larger Lens, and improve the quality of the photos enormously.

A distinction can be made between monopods and tripods. Monopods have the advantage of being light and space-saving and can be set up and dismantled quickly.
The use of a tripod offers numerous advantages: The steadier camera position means that longer exposure times can be used for brighter shots. At the same exposure time, the risk of camera shake is reduced, which benefits the sharpness of the image. This is very important for sports or animal photography, for example. They are used to support the large focal lengths / telephoto lenses and reduce the weight, and they help to ensure stability so that sharp images are no longer produced by the shaking of the shaking arm.

Monopod or tripod?

Photographers find it difficult to do without a tripod in some situations, as they reduce the strain on the photographer, which is particularly important when using long telephoto focal lengths. Pictures and videos taken with the help of a tripod are significantly less distorted and blurred, as a camera stands still in one place thanks to the useful accessory. This also allows the exposure time to be set longer, as there is no more camera shake in the picture.

With tripods, a distinction can be made between the classic tripod and the monopod. Although the tripod has a secure stand on almost any surface, it is also very bulky and heavy to transport, so in most cases you have to put on a tripod bag.

A decisive disadvantage, however, is that you can only turn the camera on the tripod to the left and right and swivel it from bottom to top. This means that you are very limited in terms of the camera position and it can happen that you miss beautiful motifs due to the immobility of the camera. In nature or at a sporting event, these are all important aspects that need to be taken into account. If you miss a subject, you usually won't get it in front of the lens again. It is therefore not the ideal accessory for snapshots.

A tripod is perfect for shots where the camera must not be moved for a longer period of time, such as a sunset or time-lapse shots, for example.

What is a monopod?

A monopod is very light and compact as it only stands on one foot, as the name suggests. This means that a monopod is also easier to transport than a tripod. The accessories can be easily transported without the need for an extra bag. Most monopods can be quickly and easily stowed away very compactly, which is why they also fit easily into a rucksack.

Strictly speaking, a monopod should not be called a monopod, as the word tripod comes from the Latin word "stativus", which means "standing". However, it cannot stand on its own because, unlike a conventional tripod, it only has one base.

The advantage here is that the camera can not only be moved to a fixed position, but can also be tilted horizontally and vertically. This helps you enormously to quickly photograph a spontaneously seen motif, as you are incredibly flexible with such a tripod.

Known brands for monopods include Manfrotto, Benro, Cullman, Gitzo, Hama, Sirui or Vanguard

Who are monopods suitable for?

Monopods are best suited to people who find holding a camera too strenuous in the long term. After holding a camera for a long time, your hands become shaky, which unfortunately causes the pictures to blur. If you still want to be able to react quickly despite the tripod so that you don't miss any situations, then a tripod is not recommended, but rather a monopod.
Monopods are most commonly used in the areas listed below:

  • Sports photography
  • Animal photography
  • Macro photography of insects and birds
  • to implement light painting well
  • Panorama shots that are not on a horizontal plane
In sports photography in particular, very large and heavy Lens are often used, which can be uncomfortable to carry without a tripod. This is why monopods are used for this area of application, which make taking photos on the edge of the pitch an easy task. This would not be possible with a classic tripod, as the mobility and flexibility with such a tripod is very limited.

The monopod is ideal for wildlife photography, as it can be easily transported and large focal lengths of 400 or 800 millimeters are also used here. Especially in this area, it is most important to show the animals as little visible area as possible so that you don't scare them and lose the subject from your lens. The tripod is not an alternative as it is simply far too bulky and unwieldy. You wouldn't be able to catch every animal on a wildlife safari.

What types of monopods are available?

They always consist of a single main leg. They are also available with a tip at the foot end, which ensures that the camera has a secure hold even in the mountains.

They are also available with spider-like feet at the end. This means that it can stand on its own on a flat surface without you having to hold it when it is level.
They are also available in combination with a walking stick. This means you can easily convert a walking stick into a monopod. Contains the same anti-shock suspension as the professional poles.

Choosing the right tripod

Always make sure that you choose a tripod that your camera will fit on. There are two different screw sizes. One is ¼ inch and the other is 3/8 inch.
If your dream tripod is not available in your screw size, you can also get an adapter that ensures that the different sizes are still compatible with each other.
If you are interested in both, it is possible to buy a tripod that can be converted into a monopod. Many tripods allow you to remove one leg so that you are not permanently tied to a tripod.

You can usefully supplement the tripod with additional accessories, such as tripod heads, which allow you to make the best possible use of your monopod.

  • Ball head: With this accessory it is possible to pan the camera freely in all directions. The adapter is adjusted with a comfortable handle.
  • Three-way panhead: It allows you to adjust the camera in three axes. This makes it possible to photograph subjects on the ground without having to swivel the tripod forwards or backwards.
  • Panorama head: This tripod head makes it possible to level the tripod using a spirit level so that it stands straight on any incline. This makes it possible to take perfect panoramic pictures, as the spirit level allows you to maintain the perfect level by constantly readjusting it.

The tripod dimension

The tripod size indicates the size of the monopod when it is folded up. You should therefore make sure that the tripod fits into your photo backpack without any problems.

The advantages +amp; disadvantages of a monopod +amp; tripods

Nachteile Einbeinstativ:

Nachteile Dreibeinstativ:

Add a quick-release plate to your tripods

A plate is a helpful accessory when it comes to attaching a heavy camera to the tripod each time. With a plate, you save yourself the work every time, because the plate, which is firmly attached to the camera, can be screwed onto the tripod very easily and quickly and removed just as easily. The simple system of the plate allows you to quickly attach it to the tripod and remove it again.
