Ultra telephoto zoom Sigma 100-400mm
Reading Time: 6 minutes - June 26, 2020
Sigma introduces a newly developed 100-400mm ultra zoom Lens for Sony E-mount and L-mount full frame. Read this article to find out what we can expect from the new telephoto giant.
The new Sigma 100-400mm
The newly calculated Sigma ultra-zoom Lens for Sony E-mount and L-mount full-frame format could soon offer a good and affordable alternative to the Sony G-master, as photographers who want to shoot in the strong telephoto range often have to dig deep into their pockets. Instead of a 70-200mm for full-frame format, Sigma is now launching the SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS, which is aimed in particular at wildlife and portrait photographers. We will test the extent to which the ultra-zoom is also worthwhile for filmmakers in the video.
At just 1100 grams, the 4x zoom for 35 mm sensors is significantly lighter than comparable lenses. Consisting of 22 elements in 16 groups, the SLD glass promises breathtaking image quality. The filter diameter is 67 millimetres, making it very versatile. The Lens will be available from July at a price of ?999.
A lens from the Contemporary series
The Sigma Contemporary product line offers high-performance all-round lenses for everyday use, combining high optical quality with a compact design and low weight. It includes standard, telephoto and zoom Lens that are suitable for a wide range of applications, from snapshots and landscape photography to travel photography.
Handling
In practical tests, the ultra-telephoto zoom lens proved to be much more practical than comparable lenses due to its size. A wide zoom ring on the front of the Lens makes the Sigma easy to hold in the hand. The dual action zoom makes it possible to quickly adjust the focal length to the situation. With the Lens Lock, the telephoto zoom can be locked at 100mm and attached to belts or backpack straps with the Capture Clip, for example.
Features
Although the new telephoto lens from Sigma has a mount for a tripod collar, this is not included in the scope of delivery and must be purchased separately. The built-in image stabilizer does a good job, as can be seen in the test shots in the video review. It also has two modes. The ability to adjust the focus range via an additional button on the Lens proved to be very useful in our test and is interesting for both wildlife photographers and "macro" photographers. The Sigma 100-400mm is also sealed against dust and splash water.
