The L-Mount is a lens bayonet that was originally developed by Leica Camera AG. It is characterized by its versatility, precision and compatibility with various camera systems. The mount was introduced in 2014 and, with the founding of the L-Mount Alliance in 2018, has developed into an open standard that is supported by several manufacturers. This gives photographers and videographers a wide choice of cameras and Lens that work seamlessly together.
Technical features of the L-Mount
The L-mount has a diameter of 51.6 mm and a flange focal distance of just 20 mm. These specifications make it possible to build compact camera bodies while providing sufficient space for the development of high-performance Lens, including fast fixed focal lengths and zoom lenses. Thanks to the high precision and stability of the bayonet, the L-mount is ideal for demanding applications, whether in photography or videography.
Manufacturers who support the L-Mount
The L-Mount Alliance is a partnership between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma. These brands have joined forces to create a compatible ecosystem of cameras and Lens. Here is an overview of the most important manufacturers:
Leica
As the inventor of the L-mount, Leica offers a range of high-quality cameras and Lens that are best known for their outstanding optical performance, workmanship and timeless design. The Leica SL and TL series utilize the L-mount and offer a selection of premium Lens such as the Leica Summicron and Leica APO-Summicron lenses.
Panasonic
Panasonic uses the L-mount in its Lumix S-series mirrorless full-frame cameras (e.g. Lumix S5, S1, S1H). The company offers a wide range of lenses that are both attractively priced and technically of a high standard. These include fast zooms such as the Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8 and fixed focal lengths such as the 50mm f/1.4.
Sigma
Sigma is known for its excellent price-performance ratio and produces a wide range of L-mount lenses. The Sigma Art, Contemporary and Sports series includes both fixed focal lengths and zoom Lens suitable for various applications. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art are particularly popular.
Samyang
Samyang has been quite popular in the past with many Sony photographers and also videographers due to the T-Stop Lens with autofocus.
Third party suppliers
In addition to the members of the L-Mount Alliance, there are also third-party suppliers who develop accessories and Lens for the L-Mount. These products are often less expensive and further expand the available range of Lens. Brands that are represented below:
- 7Artisans
- AstrHori
- LAOWA
- NiSi
- Sirui
- TTArtisan
- Viltrox
- Meike
Advantages of the L-mount system
- Thanks to the joint work of the L-Mount Alliance, it is possible to combine cameras and lenses from different brands and use them like native lenses.
- Great variety in price performance, if you are looking for a premium Lens, you will find it here with certified Leica optics, but also cheaper but powerful alternatives.
- Thanks to the small flange focal length, camera manufacturers can create particularly compact cameras and Lens in the L-mount.
