New: Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50mm f/1.7

Goodbye fixed focal lengths?

The Panasonic GH5 II was only recently introduced. But now the manufacturer has a nice addition to its lens range that complements this camera very well: the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50mm f/1.7

Anyone who has been following Panasonic lenses for a while will notice that it looks very similar to the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7. These two products not only share the continuous aperture of f/1.7, but also the same body.

In our video, we show you the advantages of this and where the manufacturer sees the use of these lenses!

8 in 2 - Less is sometimes more!

Certain focal lengths have become established in photography and are often used in professional imagery. In order to get the maximum aperture here, lens manufacturers rely on fixed focal lengths for something like 28mm 2.0, 50mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8. Both lenses now cover all these common lengths cleanly with a continuous aperture of 1.7.

Video features at a high level

However, an open aperture is not everything in videography.

The functions and tuning of the lens are more important here. The new 25-50mm performs very well and quietly with autofocus. Focus breathing is also kept to a minimum. This means that the lenses change little in size in the near / far blur range. This ensures a smoother frame count in the film.

This is one of the many professional features of these lenses. But the overall design also makes work easier. If you have ever watched a professional video shoot, you will notice that they often work with a rig. Gear wheels and boxes are used there and it has to be precisely coordinated. If the lenses are changed frequently, it is always a big effort to get the whole thing ready again. However, as these two focal lengths have the same structure and identical dimensions for all the adjustment wheels, they can be exchanged very quickly and the shoot can continue.
