Reading time: 5 minutes - February 19, 2026

New TAMRON 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD - the compact portrait zoom

With the new 35-100mm f/2.8, Tamron is expanding its line-up with a fast standard to telephoto zoom for full-frame cameras from Sony and Nikon. The aim of the development was clear: a compact, lightweight portrait zoom that is ideal for everyday use, travel and reportage. The Lenses comes as a direct response to user feedback on the popular 35-150mm F/2-2.8, which is loved for its large zoom range and good image quality, but is also somewhat large and heavy.

Tamron is also introducing many exciting features for its Lenses with the Tamron LINK Bluetooth adapter and the new version 5.0 of the Tamron Lens Utilty.

Portrait focal lengths in one Lens

The range from 35 to 100 mm covers typical portrait situations:

  • 35 mm: Ambient portraits
  • 50 mm: natural perspective
  • 85 mm: classic portrait look
  • 100 mm: stronger cropping

The Lenses practically replaces several fixed focal lengths in one compact Body.

Compact & suitable for travel

With a length of around 119 mm and a weight of just 565 g, the Lenses is one of the lightest in its class. Particularly interesting are the stable center of gravity when zooming and the pleasant feeling when shooting hand-held. This optimized balance also makes the Lenses suitable for filming (handheld and on a gimbal).

High resolution & soft bokeh

The optical construction comprises 15 lens elements in 13 groups and shines with clear details, a soft bokeh and reduced flares thanks to the optimized coating and coating - ideal for portraits and travel scenes.

Fast VXD autofocus

The VXD linear motor ensures fast focus shifts, precise tracking in combination with the latest cameras and quiet, smooth operation. This is particularly useful for spontaneous portraits or moving subjects such as children and animals.

The autofocus can also be used even more effectively, as the new 35-100mm is fully compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility. And this is where the second big topic comes into play:
The Lens Utility update to version 5.0.

Lens control via Bluetooth with Tamron LINK

By connecting the new Tamron Link Bluetooth adapter to a compatible Tamron lens, users can control numerous Lens functions wirelessly via Bluetooth using a smartphone. The new solution eliminates the limitations of conventional cable connections, increases efficiency when shooting on location and enables more flexible, tidy working.

Tamron LINK

  • Connection device between Tamron Lenses and smartphones
  • Wireless control via Bluetooth
  • Better efficiency and less cable chaos on location
  • Supports Tamron Lens Utility™ on Android and iOS devices

Tamron Lens Utility 5.0 - more creative control

The Lens Utility is much more than an app for firmware updates - it transforms compatible Lenses into fully customizable and remotely controllable tools for photography and videography!
But for whom is the Tamron Utility particularly exciting, especially with version 5.0?

More information about Tamron Lens Utility Version 5.0

Videocreator

New functions enable significantly more precise lens control:

  • Iris Marker (Iris Presets)
  • Focus/Iris-Link
  • Ring stopper to prevent overshooting
  • Remote sequencing

Focus and exposure can be reproducibly (remotely) controlled - without a large follow-focus rig.

Astrophotography

  • Astro Focus Lock with Fine Adjustment
  • storable infinity position
  • Night mode for dark environments

Perfect for night and astro shoots where minimal focus deviations are crucial.

Time Lapse Creator

The new Focus Time Lapse function enables focus pulls during interval shots. This creates dynamic time lapses without additional motor equipment.

Further improvements

  • Linear / Non-Linear Focus Switching
  • M/A response settings
  • Remote UI updates
  • Sleep suppression (no connection interruptions)

By the way, with the new Tamron Link you can program and control the Lenses via Bluetooth & app and thus fine-tune the workflow.

Why Lenses & Software must be thought of together

The 35-100mm F/2.8 is not just a new zoom - it's a Lens deliberately designed for modern workflows:

  • compact enough for travel
  • fast enough for spontaneous portraits
  • light enough for video & gimbal
  • customizable via Lens Utility

The new video features from version 5.0 in particular are an ideal match for the hybrid approach of the Lenses.

With the TAMRON 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD and the update to Lens Utility 5.0, Tamron is clearly pointing the way:

  • lightweight, mobile Lenses
  • Software-based customization
  • Focus on Hybrid Creator (Photo & Video)

If you are looking for a flexible portrait and travel zoom and want to use modern lens control at the same time, you should find a very interesting overall package here.
