01 | 100 Schadowstrasse - "A street in transition"

from the series 100 photos - 100 stories

The picture shows Schadowstra?e around 1906, known as one of the busiest streets in D?sseldorf. It was named after Wilhelm von Schadow and was one of the most popular shopping streets in the city, both then and now. Around 1950, large stores such as Karstadt and Kaufhof gained a foothold there. This was followed by further redesigns and the establishment of various stores such as Peek and Cloppenburg and, since the 1970s, our photo store "Foto Koch". The street was open to traffic for many decades, and one of the most important streetcar routes also ran through the shopping mile. The shopping street became increasingly popular and later became one of the top ten shopping streets in Germany. And again, further measures followed to increase the attractiveness of Schadowstra?e: one of the most influential projects was the Wehrhahnlinie project, which opened on February 20, 2016. However, Schadowstra?e remained a construction site. A working group consisting of politicians, retailers, administration and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce was formed to develop a process for the redesign of Schadowstra?e, including a decision in principle to largely free the shopping street from car traffic. Schadowstrasse is to be converted into a so-to-say-pedestrian zone with a central lane for cyclists in three sub-projects. Cars will only be allowed to use this lane at night. The current major construction project K?-Bogen 2 will soon be completed and the entire conversion, with upgrades such as tree islands, fountains and quiet zones, should be finalized by summer 2021. The section in front of our door should even be finished this year. As a photo retailer, we are very proud of this project and to be able to experience the redesign up close, and are excited to see what the conversion will look like in the end! We are looking forward to the new splendor of Schadowstrasse.
