The Marumi Magnetic Slim Movie Kit contains a filter adapter in the form of a ring holder [1], four neutral density filters ND2, ND4, ND8 and ND16 as well as a protective cap. The whole thing is packed in a practical bag. To be able to work with the filters from the Magnetic Slim series, a magnetic adapter must first be installed. To do this, use the adapter included in the set in the form of a Magnetic Slim Ring Holder [1] with a thread on one side. Alternatively, a separately available protective filter of the type Lens Protect/Adapter [2] can also be used. This additionally protects the front lens of the lens as a protective filter. Thanks to a strong magnet, both solutions guarantee a secure hold for the other parts of the system and ensure flexibility and speed of use.

The ultra-thin design allows multiple filters to be used at the same time
A major advantage of the Marumi Magnetic Slim system is the ability to attach one filter on top of another. By combining and mixing different types of filters into magnetic stacks, we get a powerful creative tool that we can adapt to specific conditions and creative visions. Magnetic polarizing filter
The polarizing filter included in the Magnetic Slim Movie Kit is an indispensable tool in every photographer's arsenal. Its effect is based on the selective transmission of electromagnetic light waves with a specific polarization in a specific direction. The direction of polarization that is transmitted can be influenced by turning the magnetically attached filter. This regulation allows us to eliminate unwanted reflections and mirroring. This is particularly useful when using ND filters. In addition, a polarizing filter can be used to achieve richer colors and deeper contrast in the scene, bringing out the green of the plants, the blue of the sky or the depth of the water in landscape or nature photography.
Flexible combination of ND filters
ND filters are extremely important tools in both photography and film. Their task is to reduce the amount of light that hits the sensor. Thanks to their neutral gray tones with different densities for the image color, they offer creative people additional possibilities for controlling exposure and visual effects. As the ND filters in the Magnetic Slim range can be combined by magnetically stacking different variants on top of each other, their density and influence on the exposure can be quickly varied. For example, the combination of ND2 and ND16 filters results in a 32-fold darkening, i.e. 5 EV steps. By combining ND2, ND4 and ND8 we achieve a 64-fold darkening, i.e. 6 EV steps. Why is it worth using ND filters?
One of the main reasons for using ND filters in photography is the ability to extend the exposure time, which can create motion effects. By blocking the right amount of light hitting the camera's sensor with a particular ND filter, we can force an increase in shutter speed without the risk of overexposing the image. Longer exposure times are widely used in the following areas:
Inlandscape photography
, extending the exposure time allows us to create a blurred effect of clouds or water in motion, which is particularly desirable in landscape photography.
In architectural photography
, a longer exposure time does not freeze the movement, so that moving elements such as people or vehicles can be "removed" from the image.
In night photography
, a longer exposure time for photographed cars creates the effect of light trails, which gives the images a dynamic character.
In portrait photography
, ND filters are indispensable if we want to take pictures in strong sunlight and achieve a shallow depth of field. If you shoot with a fast lens with maximum aperture such as the Sigma 50 mm F1.2 DG DN | Art or the Sigma 85 mm F1.4 DG DN | Art, the image will be overexposed even at low ISO sensitivity and the fastest available shutter speeds. ND filters reduce the amount of light, allowing the aperture in the lens to be fully opened, resulting in a beautiful blurring of the background and a vivid highlighting of the subject in the foreground.
When filming
, neutral density filters are also indispensable if we want to adhere to the rule that the shutter speed should be half as fast as the frame rate (fps). When shooting at the standard frame rate of 24 fps, the required shutter speed is 1/48 second (or 1/50 second in practice). In bright light, however, even a minimum ISO setting can lead to overexposure. In this case, ND filters make it possible to reduce the amount of light falling on the sensor so that the above rule can be observed without fear of overexposure. For this reason, the use of ND filters is extremely useful when filming, when we cannot freely adjust the shutter speed. With them we can control the exposure and at the same time, by manipulating their density, regulate the depth of field with the aperture of the lens, which allows us to achieve the desired effects in the shots.
Correlation of neutral density parameters
When delving deeper into the subject of using neutral density filters and the resulting benefits, terms such as "exposure ratio" in EV units, "filter coefficient", "optical density" or "transmission ratio" come up. In photography, the filter coefficient corresponds to the ND number. This means that an ND4 filter darkens the image by a factor of four, i.e. by 2 EV steps.
In cinematography, however, the optical density of the same filter corresponds to the designation ND0.6. The reason for this is that the amount of light that hits the sensor is reduced to 1/4, which corresponds to a transmission level of 25% and is equivalent to 2 EV steps. The first EV step corresponds to an optical density of 0.3, the next, second step to an optical density of 0.6.
