The GR III uses a slim optical system consisting of 6 elements and 4 groups with a focal length of 18.3 mm (approx. 28 mm at an equivalent focal length of 35 mm) and an aperture of F2.8. The GR IIIx uses a newly developed optical system consisting of 7 elements and 5 groups with a new focal length of 26.1 mm (approx. 40 mm at an equivalent focal length of 35 mm). High refractive index, low dispersion glass lenses and aspherical high precision molded glass lenses are optimally placed in the lens construction according to the optical system of each model to suppress optical distortion and chromatic aberration to the absolute limit to deliver a high degree of sharpness. This results in sharp and clear images across the entire field of view, even at full aperture.
Advanced image processing and responsiveness.
Meet the latest GR ENGINE 6
The GR III models' image processor is the latest GR ENGINE 6, which boosts the GR's essential high image quality performance for a higher level of detail. Faster processing is made possible by the combination of a high-resolution sensor and multi-tone 14-bit RAW. This also contributes to improved responsiveness and functionality for autofocus and movie.
With our original signal processing technology, shooting at ISO 102400 is possible
The GR III models feature a high-performance processor "Accelerator Unit", which provides a powerful way to support high image quality. The signal output by the image sensor is sent to the image processor after optimal processing. This reduces noise and ensures excellent resolution and color reproduction across the entire sensitivity range. It also enables shooting at ISO 102400.
3-axis, 4-stage shake reduction for high image quality over a wide shooting range
Camera shake is reduced, resulting in razor-sharp images even when taking snapshots in fractions of a second. Shake Reduction (SR) is installed and makes the body size of the GR III models compact. It minimizes shake on three axes, including yaw, pitch and roll axes. Compensation effects provide up to 4 stops of shutter speed*. * Measured according to CIPA standards.
AA filter simulator to reduce false colors and moiré thanks to Shake Reduction mechanism
The effects of the optical anti-aliasing filter (AA) are achieved with Shake Reduction (SR). By slightly moving the image sensor during exposure, false colors and moiré are suppressed. Depending on the subject, you can choose whether you want to give priority to resolution or reduce false colors and moiré. Select [High] or [Low] for the effect settings.
- This function is available at shutter speeds of less than 1/1000 second.
A compact body and functional design full of high performance
The GR III models have been developed with a focus on preserving the body
compact size while maintaining high functionality. The model is one size smaller than the GR II and about the same size as the GR DIGITAL IV with a 1/1.7-inch image sensor. A minimalist design was sought to create a tool that prioritized portability and expression. The button and dial layout has been fully considered to allow comfortable one-handed operation.
Hybrid AF with the combination of image plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF
The AF system is a mixture of image plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF. It combines the advantages of high-speed focusing in image-plane phase-matching AF with the focusing precision of contrast-detection AF. The problem of searching for focus peaks that often occurs with contrast detection AF has been reduced to achieve the fast shooting performance required for street photography.
High speed approx. 0.8 seconds start time after switching on
A high-performance motor drives the lens barrel so that it moves quickly from the retracted position to the shooting position. In addition, the program start process is optimized to shorten the start time. Thanks to the built-in lens lock, there is also no need to remove the lens cap, so you won't miss a sudden photo opportunity.
Focus modes to suit versatile subjects and shooting styles
Eight focus modes are available, including continuous AF for versatile shooting styles. The LCD monitor, which supports touch operation, also allows direct control of the AF frame using touch and slide gestures. You can also focus (Touch AF) and shoot while moving the AF frame to quickly capture shots in any type of composition.
Face/eye detection autofocus to support portrait shooting
The camera detects faces or eyes* and focuses. This function is activated in [Auto Area AF], [Select AF] and [Pinpoint AF]. When the face or eye is detected and focused, the focus point is framed. It is also possible to activate this function only in [Auto Area AF]. If you want to focus on a subject instead of faces with this setting, simply change the focus mode without turning off face/eye detection.
With Full Press Snap, you will never miss a shot again
When the shutter button is fully pressed, the camera releases the shutter at the preset distance. This high-speed shooting feature is unique to GR and eliminates the focus delay of half-pressing the shutter button, allowing you to capture split-second moments instantly. Full Press Snap is also performed by touching the LCD monitor. *To use the full range of functions with GR III, the latest firmware is required. Click here for more details.
Touch panel and dial for intuitive control
