A completely new ultra-telephoto experience.
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports was developed as an ultra-telephoto Lens exclusively for mirrorless system cameras. In a remarkably compact and lightweight body, it offers a focal length of 500mm and outstanding image quality. By using several exclusive, specially manufactured glass lens elements with a large diameter and low dispersion, it has been possible to significantly reduce the size of the lens design without the further use of diffractive optical elements. At the same time, the lens achieves a high resolving power that more than meets the expectations of a 500mm fixed focal length lens.

The handy lens housing is made of high-precision technical plastic parts and magnesium, is dust and splash-proof* and, as is usual with our lenses, is of outstanding build quality. With its high imaging performance, extremely compact size for an ultra-telephoto lens and extensive features, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports offers a new photographic experience for wildlife, aviation, sports and fast-action photographers.

Thanks to the new optical design with exclusive low-dispersion glass elements, it has been possible to develop a compact lens construction without compromising on optical performance. This design also offers excellent correction of aberrations. In addition to its size, which enables hand-held shooting, high-speed autofocus with HLA (High-Response Linear Actuator) drive and the optical stabilizer with OS2 algorithm ensure comfortable and professional photography.

Thanks to a new optical design, it was possible to make the optical system significantly more compact for a 500mm focal length Lens. By using exclusive convex lens elements with low dispersion in the front area of the Lens, a comparatively short overall length could be achieved. At the same time, these elements contribute to the excellent aberration correction. The high level of production in SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu, Japan, provides the necessary precision for the processing of these exclusive low-dispersion glass elements.

The Lens has excellent correction of all aberrations, especially axial chromatic aberration, which cannot be corrected by the camera software. This ensures a consistently high resolution from the center of the image to the edge.

First-class manufacturing quality
The lens housing and optical system are in perfect harmony thanks to state-of-the-art materials and optimized optical and mechanical design. The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports takes account of the trend towards compact and mobile equipment and, as a telephoto fixed focal length, even enables freehand shots.

The usual quality of workmanship is not compromised. The lens is dust and splash-proof and offers the high robustness of SIGMA Sports lenses. This also applies to the operating elements such as switches and rings. Here, attention has been paid to excellent haptics and operability.

High-precision TSC* parts for high performance and compact design
To make the lens housing robust and compact at the same time, materials such as TSC and magnesium are used in suitable places. TSC plastics effectively reduce the weight of the Lens without compromising on stability. Particularly in the internal structure of the lens, the use of a high-precision manufactured TSC component makes it possible to achieve high robustness with low weight. For external components, the TSC material ensures a high-quality surface that gives the Lens its premium character.

Thanks to the highly developed manufacturing technology of the SIGMA plant in Aizu, Japan, the tolerances in production are in the micrometer range. Together with the craftsmanship of SIGMA employees, this ensures high performance and lasting value of the Lens.
* TSC (Thermally-Stable-Composite) is a polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminum.

Maximum ease of use in all shooting situations
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports features an aperture ring and customizable function buttons*, which can be assigned the desired functions via the camera. The L-mount version of the Lens is also compatible with the SIGMA TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2x) teleconverters while retaining the AF function. This enables shots with a focal length of up to 1,000mm.
* Only in combination with compatible cameras. The available functions may vary depending on the camera used.

Customizable functions
In addition to the focusing range limiter, which can be used to limit the focus range for faster focusing if required, the Lens has three AFL buttons that can be individually assigned with selected functions. The AFL buttons are quick and easy to operate regardless of the camera's orientation.

A user mode switch allows the visibility of the OS effect to be switched in the viewfinder and display. For Lens with L-Mount*, the optional SIGMA USB Dock UD-11 can be used to customize the function of the user mode switch.
* As no USB dock is available for the Sony E-mount, the default settings cannot be changed for Sony E-mount Lens.

Developed for harsh environments
Weather-resistant like all sports lenses

Like all lenses in the Sports product line, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is also protected against the ingress of dust and splash water*. The bayonet, control rings, switches and housing connections are specially sealed. In addition, the front element of the Lens has a water and oil-repellent coating to make cleaning easier.
* The Lens is dust and splash-proof, but not waterproof.

High-quality coating
An ideal lens directs the incident light through all the lenses and onto the sensor.

If, on the other hand, some of the light is reflected by individual lenses, not only is the light yield reduced; the reflections within the lens create ghost images and flare spots or reduce the contrast. Such effects would be particularly noticeable in backlit shots.

To prevent this, our 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports uses a Super Multi-Layer Coating (SML), which reduces flare and ghosting. The result is clear, sharp and high-contrast images without annoying lens flares.

The 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is compatible with mirrorless full-frame cameras with L-mount or Sony E-mount.
A newly developed stepping motor is used for fast focusing. The autofocus with automatic eye detection used in newer mirrorless cameras is also supported, making the precise focusing of portraits, for example, child's play.
