This is where the Sigma AF 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS C Sony FE mount surprises, because at just under 20cm long and 1140g in weight, it's surprisingly compact for an ultra-telephoto zoom, without compromising on image quality or functionality!

Versatile, intuitive controls

The ultra-telephoto zoom's controls include an AF-MF switch, a focus limiter switch, and a freely assignable AFL button. There's also a zoom and focus ring, and a zoom lock switch, as well as an OS switch that turns the optical stabilizer on and off and lets you choose between two modes - Mode 1 for general photography and Mode 2 for, say, motorsports photography. There's also a choice of rotary or sliding zoom for even faster operation. The Lens is dust- and splash-proof all around, while the port is also equipped with a rubber seal.

Sigma's Contemporary product line offers high-performance, all-around lenses for everyday use, as it combines high optical quality with compact design and light weight. DG

DG Lenses - SIGMA's DG lenses are designed for demanding use on digital cameras with sensors up to 24x36mm (colloquially known as full-frame). By using state-of-the-art coating processes, ghosting caused by reflections on the sensor surface is successfully eliminated, while at the same time achieving balanced colors and superior optical performance.

Stabilized Lenses allow you to shoot handheld without shake for 3 - 4 exposure stops longer than usual. With IF lenses, the build length of the Lens remains constant during focusing and the front lens does not rotate, allowing you to conveniently use polarizing filters and a tulip-shaped lens hood. Since the overall length of the Lens remains constant during focusing, there is no noticeable weight shift during focusing with this system. As a result, the Lens is well balanced at all times.

Perfektes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis
Endlich gibt es eine Alternative zum Sony 100-400 G-Master!
Sigma hat eine bezahlbare Alternative zum GM herausgebracht. Ich habe das Sony FE 70-200mm f4. Bei der Landschaftsfotografie fehlte mir oft mehr Brennweite (über 200mm hinaus). Das 100-400 G-Master von Sony war mir immer zu teuer. Aber jetzt habe ich bei dem Sigma direkt zugeschlagen.
Das Sigma 100-400mm habe ich bislang nur an einem Testchart ausprobieren können, habe es aber direkt mit dem Sony 70-200mm f4 sowie dem adaptierten (Sony a-Mount) Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 Macro in puncto Schärfe und Kontrast vergleichen können.

In der Mitte ist das Sigma ab 135mm immer schärfer, als die beiden vorgenannten!

Die Bildränder:
100mm bei f6.3, f8 & f11:
- bei 100mm liegt das Sigma in Auflösung sowohl hinter dem Sony 70-200 f4, sowie dem Tampon 70-200 f2.8 (bei den o.g. Blenden). CA's sucht man allerdings vergeblich!

135mm bei f6.3, f8 & f11:
- Bei 135mm holt das Sigma auf, ist gleichauf mit dem Sony, aber liegt noch hinter dem Tamron.

200mm bei f6.3, f8 & f11:
- Bei 200mm kommt das Sigma fast an das Tamron heran (das Tamron ist in den Bildrändern einfach sau scharf und kontrastreich) und überholt gleichzeitig das Sony.

300-400mm bei f6.3, f8 & f11:
- Diese Brennweiten können nicht direkt mit den vorgenannten Objektiven verglichen werden. Hier vergleiche ich das Sigma bei 300 und 400mm mit den beiden vorgenannten bei ihrer längsten Brennweite: 200mm
Das Sigma überholt nun beide Objektive sowohl bei 300, als auch bei 400mm (bei allen Blendenwerten) und das ist erstaunlich!

Fazit Auflösung & Kontrast: In Bildmitte ab 135mm immer Schärfer als das Sony 70-200mm f4 und dem Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Macro, in den Bildecken ab 200mm besser als die beiden vorgenannten bei 200mm. CA's nicht vorhanden!

Insgesamt ist das Objektiv sehr fertig verarbeitet (Metall und hochwertiges Kunststoff). Bei der manuellen Fokussierung kann ich mit dem Sigma sehr viel genauer scharf stellen. Der AF ist treffsicher und schnell! Die Gegenlichtblende wirkt allerdings sehr billig! Dies kann ich bei der Performance und dem Preis aber gut in Kauf nehmen!
Ob und wie sich das Sigma bezüglich Staubeinschlüssen verhält, bleibt allerdings abzuwarten. Diesbezüglich habe ich mit Sigma und Tamron generell eher mäßige Erfahrungen gemacht..
Die Stativschelle werde ich mir bestellen, sobald diese verfügbar ist, denn bei starkem Wind und auf dem Stativ wird bei 400mm zu viel Bewegung vorhanden sein, da ohne Schelle die Gewichtsverteilung nicht in Waage liegt (sehr Kopflastig). Die Verbindung mit der Kamera (Mount) wirkt dann wie ein Hebel. Verwackler sind dann wahrscheinlicher.

Alles in Allem sehr zu empfehlen!
