Construction
The SIGMA 500mm F4 DG HSM | Sports offers a highly effective dust and splash-proof construction and is therefore designed for top performance in harsh, difficult shooting conditions. The front and rear lens elements have a water and oil repellent coating, so water can be easily wiped away and oil and grease cannot adhere to the surface. This feature is particularly useful when shooting in drizzle or spray near the sea.
Magnesium alloy barrel
To minimize the weight of the super telephoto lens, the lens barrel is made from a magnesium alloy. This lightweight and robust alloy contributes to the excellent handling of the SIGMA 500mm F4 DG HSM | Sports.
Lens hood made of carbon fiber
The lens hood is made of carbon fiber, a particularly light and robust material. The entire Lens is designed to be lightweight with excellent performance to support the photographer even in difficult shooting conditions.
Tripod clamp with 90° click-stop
As photographers often use a monopod or tripod to shoot with such a super telephoto lens, the tripod clamp is large and extremely stable (the tripod clamp cannot be removed from the lens). The antistatic nickel coating of the tripod clamp parts also increases the quality and durability of the 90° click-stop. In addition, it is even easier to switch between landscape and portrait format. In order to be able to align the lens independently of the 90° detents, the detent on the lens can be disengaged using a switch. The specially designed carrying strap (included) can be attached to the tripod clamp for easy transportation. This also takes the strain off the camera mount to which the Lens is attached.
Outstanding optical performance
The Lens contains one SLD and two FLD glass elements and the optimized power distribution helps to minimize spherical aberrations and longitudinal chromatic aberrations. In addition, the optical design minimizes lateral chromatic aberrations that can otherwise affect telephoto shots. Image quality remains excellent even when the Lens is used with a SIGMA teleconverter (optionally available).
OS system with accelerometer sensor and new, intelligent OS algorithm
The optical stabilizer (OS) offers an accelerometer sensor - for even more precise performance and for compensation of up to four exposure stops. Two OS modes are available: OS mode 1 is suitable for standard photography and mode 2 is ideal for motorsport shots and other moving subjects that require dragging. In Mode 2, the accelerometer sensor, intelligent OS and the new algorithm work together to provide effective stabilization regardless of whether the camera is moved horizontally, vertically or diagonally. This function enables effective panning and ensures outstanding shots of moving objects.
AF function switch with preset AF modes
The AF function switch allows you to make your own personal autofocus settings. The Lens can remember the focus position of your choice or switch off AF until it is needed again.
2 Anytime MF modes
The MO (Manual Override) switch position has been added to the AF/MF switch as an additional focusing mode option. When the switch is in the MO position, turning the focus ring will result in manual focus even in focus tracking AF mode. In the AF position, the default setting for anytime AF is active. The MO sensitivity can be adjusted using the SIGMA USB dock.
Quieter and faster AF
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures fast and silent AF. By further improving the drive algorithm of the previous models, an additional increase in focus accuracy has been achieved in focus tracking AF (AF-C).
Further functions
The almost circular aperture consists of 9 diaphragm blades and ensures a very pleasant bokeh outside the focal plane of the image. The Lens is equipped with a solid and precise brass bayonet. The special treatment of the surface to increase its strength enables long-term use. The super multi-layer coating (SML) reduces stray light and ghost images and delivers sharp and high-contrast images, even in backlighting.
