The special look of anamorphic lenses is legendary and unparalleled. Many filter manufacturers try to simulate the effect for all lenses. But this cannot hold a candle to the real anamorphic look! We will break it down a bit in the following paragraphs.
How does an anamorphic lens work?
When working with such a lens, the image is compressed and then pulled apart again. This can lead to problems when working with the corresponding lenses, because only after it has been stretched the image can be evaluated. Attention: Not every camera is able to display this image correctly in the camera itself. So with many cameras an external monitor is necessary, which then displays the image correctly.
The advantage of shrinking is that the image section is wider than it normally is. Because the image is compressed, the light spheres (bokeh) are also compressed. If these are now pulled apart again, the spheres partly become horizontal lines which describe the special feature of the look. How far these are pulled depends on the aspect ratio of the respective lens.
The compression of the image is made possible by a special construction of the lens. Special curved glass is used and depending on which coating is applied, the flare has a blue or a yellow/gold color.
What do the values for anamorphic lenses mean?
There are different values that describe the compression of the anamorphic lens. There are the following aspect ratios:
- 1,8x
- 1,6x
- 1,33x
- 2,4:1
