A Beauty Dish is a light shaper used to reduce shadows and evenly illuminate the face of a model or person. The Beauty Dish produces a type of light called "soft light" that makes the skin appear smooth and flawless by reducing shading and wrinkles, but still provides some harshness. Because of the internal reflector, the Beauty Dish is better illuminated than is the case with a softbox.
A Beauty Dish is particularly suitable for portrait photography, especially beauty and fashion photography, as it illuminates the model's face well and can create a balanced exposure of the face to bring out the beauty and softness of the skin. It can also be used to create a dramatic look by creating deep shadows (dark shadows) and hard edges.
What are the versions of the light shaper?
- White Inside: Produces softer light while swallowing more power because the silver inside reflects better than the white does.
- Silver inside: Gives more power of the flash to the model. At the same time, this is also slightly harder, so it produces less soft light, resulting in darker shadows.
- Beauty dish with diffuser cloth: Many beauty dishes come with an optional diffuser cloth, which softens the light.
- Beauty Dish with Honeycomb: This combination brings in principle the opposite effect to the diffuser light, a honeycomb directs the light.
