Meanwhile, the Mist filters enjoy a great popularity again. The look is gaining popularity in street photography, as well as in urban and portrait photography, and is increasingly used to give images and videos a cinematic look.
What other names do the filters have?
Filters are distributed under a wide variety of brands and names, including the following:
- Mist Filter
- Black Pro Mist
- Diffusion Filter
- Pro Mist
- Black Mist
- and many more.
What are the strengths of the Mist filters?
We recommend to start with the 1/4 or 1/8 strength, there the look is not yet so exaggeratedly strong and the result may no longer correspond to what you like. Most content creators often don't use more than the 1/4 mist filter either. The look works best on a fixed focal length, think about what focal lengths you use most before you buy and take a closer look at the filter diameter of the lenses. If you find a large intersection here, that's very good.
Why should the filter be close to the lens?
You can also buy a large filter, but here you have to remember to be as close to the lens as possible. If you work with reduction rings here, they should go as close as possible to the focal length that is on the lens. Here is an example: lens thread is 62mm, your filter has a thread diameter of 82mm, then you would need a ring from 62 to 82mm, this goes step by step, but also directly.
If you work with step up or step down rings, you always make a compromise, because the problem with this is quite clear. The diffusion of the filter will affect the focus performance of your camera, the further away it is the bigger it will be, another effect is that the desired soft focus will not be able to work properly and will be much wider than when the filter is directly on the lens. A final effect to consider here is the image detail that is cropped, as each lens has a shooting angle. Depending on the focal length, it can happen that the filter is visible on the sides or that black shading occurs.
