Nikon Z9 - The new firmware version 2.0

Nikon has just released a new firmware update for their flagship model. Firmware version 2.0 brings many new features for filmmakers and photographers. In addition to the ability to record 8K 60p in N-RAW internally, it is now also possible to record 4K oversampling of 8K in 60p, among other new features.

What's new? - Video

Here's an overview of the most important new features for filmmakers:

8.3K/60p in-camera

With firmware version 2.0, 8.3K movies (8256x4644) can be recorded in-camera at 60p in Nikon's RAW codec "N-RAW", utilizing the full width of the Z9 sensor.
In addition, there is the option to choose between two compression options (High-Quality / Normal).
This recording requires a CFexpress Type-B card.

4K UHD oversampling from 8K

There is now an item "Extended Oversampling" in the menu under the movie settings, which allows recording in 4K 60p in 8K oversampling. Previously, oversampling was only available in 4K 24p or 30p.

Waveform monitor & other display features

In addition to a new (resizable) waveform monitor, which makes it easier to estimate exposure, there is now a red frame around the live view image when shooting, and a dedicated video display mode (as seen on Cinema cameras).

Overheating

For the Z9, you can now (as you know it from Sony cameras, for example) optionally change the overheating sensitivity from "Standard" to "High", so that the camera doesn't shut down so quickly when overheating threatens.

ISO & Shutterspeed setting

New options for setting ISO and shutter speed have also been added. For setting the ISO, it is now possible to optionally set the ISO in 1/6 steps (instead of 1/3). The exposure time can now be set longer than the frame rate (e.g. 1/30 exposure time when shooting in 60 fps). However, this function can also be turned on/off.

What is new? Photo Mode

Here is an overview of the new features and functions for photographers.

Pre-Release Capture

With the new "Pre-Release Capture" function, the camera saves continuous shots up to one second before the shutter button is pressed. So you never miss an important moment.

EVF - 120 fps

The electronic viewfinder has received a new 120fps mode, which sets the viewfinder's frame rate to 120fps. This feature is ideal for working with fast subjects.

AF points

With firmware version 2.0, the AF point can be freely configured in size and shape. This means that up to 20 different measuring field patterns can be set. This can be helpful, for example, when photographing large, fixed image elements (such as a tennis net).

Focus recall

Multiple buttons can now be assigned to focus positions, and each button can recall its own or the same focus position.

The update is available for download as of 20.04.
