Nikon ZR: The first Nikon cine camera with RED technology

Nikon ZR: Cine camera with RED DNA

The best of both worlds: RED quality meets Nikon handling

The camera and film world has a new power duo: Nikon x RED. Two brands that have so far tended to go their separate ways are combining their expertise and launching the Nikon ZR, a camera that offers a fresh approach to professional video production. In this article, we find out whether this really is the most professional "entry-level camera" and what makes it so special.

7 reasons,

for the new Nikon ZR

  1. RED technology inside: professional RED RAW codec for wide dynamic range and sensational color reproduction
  2. up to 6K 60p & 4K 120p RAW recording with three different RAW codecs for different editing modes
  3. exceptional 4-inch display: ultra-bright with 1,000 nits & DCI-P3 color space
  4. large Nikon Z bayonet: with adapter also suitable for almost all Lens of other brands such as Sony or Canon
  5. Smart Hot-Shoe for external audio interfaces
  6. 32-bit floating audio recording: highest sound quality with creative freedom
  7. Compact & light: only 630 g light and 134 x 80.5 x 49 mm small
And all this at a fair price!

Nikon ZR - A new era begins

We know Nikon as a heavyweight in the photography sector, RED stands for high-end cinema cameras. The two brands have been slowly converging in recent years: First with RED color profiles in Nikon cameras, later with the RED Komodo including Nikon Z-Mount. Now comes the next bold step - a jointly developed cinema camera for the broad market. The Nikon ZR brings real RED technology into a compact Nikon body for the first time. The goal: an all-in-one camera that is interesting for both beginners and professional content creators.

The model name "ZR" is no coincidence. The camera actually combines technologies from both brands. Nikon contributes its expertise in autofocus, Lens and image processing. RED provides its own Color Science, its own RAW formats, a total of nine colour profiles and optimizations in dynamic range. It is a true co-production, not just a RED logo on a Nikon camera, but a real joint venture for cine enthusiasts.

Compact and tidy: the body of the Nikon ZR

Visually, the ZR is immediately striking. It looks slimmer than other models in the Nikon universe, tidy, almost reduced. Many classic control elements have been deliberately removed. After all, the camera should be fully operable even without additional accessories, without a cage or rig. Control is largely via the new, central display. The body itself therefore remains compact, robust and modern, ideal for anyone who wants to work on the move or as a one-man band.

Sensor & RAW power for filmmakers

A stabilized, partially stacked 24.5 megapixel full-frame sensor is at work inside. This enables video recording in 6K RAW at up to 60 frames per second - without cropping. Those who prefer to record in 4K can access up to 120 frames per second, albeit in Super35 crop. The whole thing is complemented by 15& f-stops of dynamic range and a dual base ISO at 800 and 6400.

Of course, Nikon also brings its latest autofocus system here, which performs particularly well in combination with the in-house Z Lens.

Will the fanless design be a problem for longer exposures? Not according to Nikon, and initial tests show that it does: The camera remains amazingly stable even with RAW formats.

The display as the central control element

The 4-inch touch display deserves special attention. It is not only larger than most other cameras, but also has a significantly higher resolution. With around 3 megapixels, DCI-P3 color space, 3D LUT monitoring and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, it can easily compete with external monitors. At the same time, the 16:10 format ensures that auxiliary lines and displays move out of the actual image area and therefore disturb the image composition less. Operation via the touch menu is intuitive and consistent. If you are looking for lots of freely assignable buttons, you won't find them here, but that is not the aim of this concept.

Shooting options for every workflow

The Nikon ZR supports a total of seven different recording formats, including ProRes RAW, Nikon RAW and RED RAW. The selection is wide enough to cover both high-quality productions and fast social media content. Those who prefer to work with smaller files in post-production can record a proxy file to a MicroSD card in parallel to the main recording on the CFexpress card - practical, especially when on the move.

Another professional feature that is otherwise rarely found in this price range: 32-bit floating audio. It allows sound recordings that are too loud or too quiet to be corrected retrospectively without any loss of quality. The ME-D10 is a new clip-on microphone from Nikon that not only supports 32-bit float, but also has three different directional characteristics.

Who is the Nikon ZR suitable for?

The ZR is not a classic entry-level camera in the sense of entry-level price and minimal functions. Rather, it is a professional solution for anyone who wants to enter the cine sector or develop further in this area. It is particularly exciting for filmmakers, content creators or solo producers who want to achieve high-quality results without a lot of equipment. At the same time, it can be an ideal B-cam for RED users - more compact, lighter, but with familiar color reproduction and RED compatibility.

Whether commercials, documentaries, music videos, weddings or social media content - the Nikon ZR is flexible enough to be used in a wide variety of productions. And without the need to immediately reach for additional hardware.

Conclusion

With the ZR, Nikon and RED are taking a bold and very modern approach: they are delivering a professional but affordable camera that is consistently designed for video production without making unnecessary compromises in terms of quality, flexibility or handling.

With an RRP of €2,349, the Nikon ZR is clearly positioned below comparable cine cameras with RAW function and a large full-frame sensor. For many, this is likely to be the decisive point: Anyone who has previously shied away from entering the professional video sector - be it because of expensive RIG solutions or complex setups - will get a well thought-out and high-quality all-in-one system at a fair entry-level price.
