Directional microphones as functional equipment for precise sound recordings without background noise

High sound quality plays an important role when recording noises, conversations and music. This is particularly important for video shoots, press conferences or other interviews. To get the best out of your microphone, it is important to know the directivity. Understanding how microphones react to sound at different angles and in which directions microphones point is of great value for your work as a sound engineer and sound assistant. This often requires microphones that can be placed further away. This type of microphone is known as a directional microphone or shotgun microphone.

What is a shotgun microphone?

A directional microphone is a microphone with a strong directional characteristic that is characterized by a high degree of focusing. Sound that hits the directional microphone perpendicularly is not attenuated, while sound coming from the side is strongly attenuated. Directional microphones are based on interference. These are vibration paths that can cancel each other out. The directional microphone makes use of this principle, which is why it is also known as an interference receiver. This makes it possible to reduce disturbing background noise from the side and suppress audible sounds behind the shotgun. Accordingly, a directional microphone can pick up sounds coming from the front with high sensitivity, but not sounds from the sides and rear. Conventional microphones can pick up sounds from the front, rear and sides.

What can a shotgun microphone be used for?

Shotgun microphones are a good solution for various applications. These types of microphones are specifically designed to pick up sounds in front of the microphone while rejecting sounds from other directions. This makes directional microphones ideal for your voiceover recordings and interviews where clear sound quality without background noise or echo is required. As a result, directional microphones are good for capturing voices as the recording pattern reduces background noise.

This makes it easy to clean up the sound without making it unnatural. When broadcasting live at events, you can use directional microphones to record conversations and loud noises in particular. The reduction of ambient noise makes it easier to hear the person being spoken to or listened to. When recording sounds in crowded spaces such as markets, airports or train stations, you can also use this method to isolate certain sources and remove unwanted background noise so that the recorded sound remains intelligible.

What are the advantages of directional microphones?

There are many advantages to directional microphones based on the areas of application described above. They score points for their clear sound quality and for filtering out noise in loud environments, making them ideal for recording interviews. The bass in the sound also comes into its own when using shotgun microphones. Furthermore, there is little inherent noise during operation and the microphone has a high directional effect. Thanks to their low weight and excellent workmanship, you can use these microphones flexibly and benefit from their durability. There is also a special shotgun edition that comes with a wide range of accessories.

What problems arise when using shotgun microphones?

In addition to the advantages of shotgun microphones, their use can also be associated with problems. Shotgun microphones are ideal for isolating certain sound sources and ambient noise when you want to concentrate on a conversation. However, they are not ideal if you want to capture more than one sound source at a time. They also require very precise alignment with the sound source - this is not easy, especially with moving targets, and requires practice. Even slight deviations in the alignment of the microphone can result in sound coloration. In addition, you need to consider wind susceptibility as a challenge when using shotguns, which is why effective wind protection is required.

What alternatives are there to shotgun microphones?

The lavalier microphone is known as a small, button-sized microphone that can be clipped to a person's shirt. It is often used for interviews, walk-and-talk scenes and instructional videos as well as at events. The lavalier microphone is an ideal alternative to the shotgun microphone, especially when recording people who move around a lot. You can wire it up and connect it directly to a camera or smartphone.

Shotgun microphones are often attached to the end of a long pole and either placed on a tripod or operated by hand. You can also attach this to a camera. Visually, the shotgun microphone resembles a long rod or a tube, which is also the reason for the name shotgun microphone. This is advantageous in order to align it precisely to the sound source.
