On tour with the new Samyang 24mm f/1.8
as part of our Online Fototage
Tim Lunkenheimer from Ingelheim am Rhein is a passionate videographer and produced a video in collaboration with Samyang for the launch of the new AF 24mm F1 .8 FE. At the end of March, he went on a video and astro tour with the new Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 FE in Hunsr?ck and Frankfurt. We talked to him about his ideas, the Lens and how the filming went.
Samyang 24mm f/1.8Tim, you produced the new video for the launch of the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 FE for Samyang. What exactly did you do ?
I created an image video for the launch of the new Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 FE . The video was produced in advance and then published as a teaser before the launch and then again in full length just in time for the launch of the new Lens on all known social media channels.
What was the idea behind the video? How did you go about shooting it, what was the process like?
I received the AF 24mm F1.8 from Samyang very early on, including some information about the new features that have been specially optimized for astrophotography, such as the focus hold button and the LED indicator. The idea and concept for the image video almost came about by itself. Since such a fast wide-angle Lens is incredibly versatile, it was important to me to capture and show architectural shots in addition to astro and landscape scenes, hence the detour from the breathtaking nature of the Hunsr?ck to the lively and urban Frankfurt. I tried to create as much material as possible and to showcase the nature and the protagonist as well as the new Samyang AF 24mm F1.8. There are therefore two levels in the video, firstly the image level and secondly the product level. It was important to me to collect a lot of images in advance and then combine everything in the montage with the product shots. I wanted to produce a video that didn't correspond to a classic Lens image video and was produced according to a certain pattern, but was characterized by the different sequences, detail shots and film techniques, e.g. drone shots.
Tim LunkenheimerIs video production your main area or do you also work in photography?
I originally started with sports videography, but I've always been interested in photography as well. I'm currently in the process of setting up my own photo studio where I can devote myself to new photo projects.
That means that you also took photos with the new Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 in addition to the video. What do you think of the new Samyang Lens?
I always had the Samyang 24mm F1.8 with me in order to be able to take suitable pictures in addition to the planned shoots. This was absolutely no problem with this Lens, as it is super compact, small, light and handy and delivers excellent image quality. I was therefore able to take and collect a lot of pictures spontaneously and combine the material with the video and product shots later on. The Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 felt great from the first moment I held it in my hand and the new features were really self-explanatory. In my opinion, this is a very important aspect. The factory preset focus setting to infinity and the LED indicator that shows successful focusing in green, as well as the fast, precise and above all quiet autofocus are a real plus, especially when shooting at night and video. Thanks to its wide angle of view, the special functions, the high speed of 1:1.8 and the consistent imaging performance, the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 is perfect for astrophotography and landscape photography, but it also delivers in architectural photography. As we had to contend with April weather from time to time during our shoot, I was glad that the Lens has all-round weather protection, which made it possible to work in the drizzle. For my part, I can only say it's a top Lens, which is why I kept it and will definitely take it with me on my next night photo session.
