Tamron Lens Utility introduction
Reading time: 5 minutes - February 24, 2022 - by Markus Igel

Overview of the new Lens Utility

In the new free version of the Tamron Lens Utility it is now possible to customize the previously released lenses Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Sony FE-Mount & Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD Sony FE-Mount down to the last detail to your personal needs.

Below we provide an insight into the functions of the Tamron Lens Utility:

A-B focus

A powerful feature for videographers, but also for specific cases in photography. Two focus points can now be saved, which can be selected repeatedly by pressing the lens. One functionality that can be adjusted at the same time is the focus speed that is used when changing the focus points. This makes it possible to film beautiful scenes with a changing focus without any extra accessories.

Focus preset

Here you can save a focus point and return to it later. The functionality is very similar to that of the A-B focus. The only difference is that you save a point and return to it later. The whole thing is particularly interesting for photographers who work with ND filters or in the dark and do not want to reset the focus, as the function is particularly helpful here, as the focus is back in the right place without much effort.

Manual focus method / MF method

Here the software allows the lens to be individualized to the extent that it can be differentiated between non-linear & linear. If you now select linear focus, you will then be given the choice of rotation angle for the lens used. Now the focus can no longer be changed via the speed of dragging, but via the angle of rotation of the lens.

Further functionalities

In addition to the features mentioned above, the Lens Utiltity also offers the following functions:

  • Use focus ring for aperture selection
  • Additional button for assigning functions in the camera
  • Change the direction of rotation of the focus ring

Tamron Mobile Lens Utility

This app has only recently become available and offers a few more options for customizing the lenses. The lens can be adapted to different needs, allowing many functions to be used better and more conveniently on set. Only the firmware updates can still only be installed on the desktop client.

What can be customized with the app?

  • A/B focus
  • Linear focus or rotation focus
  • Exposure
  • Change focus ring to aperture

The only requirement for using the USB-C cable is that it has OTG; you may also need to activate this in the settings on your phone first. As soon as the lens is connected to the smartphone, the settings can be synchronized and different focus points can be controlled. This offers a lot of opportunity for creative development, especially for video creation. The functions work in a similar way to how they are used in the desktop application.

Summary

We think the new Tamron Lens Utility rounds off the Tamron lens perfectly and supports not only content creators, but also hobby filmmakers and photographers in their way of working. Setting up the functions is very intuitive and easy, a simple click on Save and the data is transferred to the lens. No more need for an external docking station, only the connection on the lens is required.
