Three-point lighting
The most important lighting technique for portrait photography in the studio is three-point lighting. As the name suggests, it consists of three light sources:
- the guide light, which should illuminate the largest part
- the fill light, which brightens the other half of the face
- the highlight to create an edge of light at the back of the model's face

The guide light
With a guiding light, it is advisable to use a larger light source in order to get the softest possible light on the face or product. If possible, it should be positioned at a 45 degree angle to the model to give the face more structure. It is generally advisable to avoid direct light, as this usually creates harsh shadows. It is important to keep to 45 degrees.
The fill light
Fill light can determine whether an image appears very dramatic and rich in contrast or rather subdued and evenly lit. For a high-contrast, dramatic look, it is not necessary to use an additional light: underexposed areas can be brightened slightly with a reflector without losing the dramatic look.
Front guide light, side fill lightsThe highlight
The highlight now acts as the cherry on top, adding the finishing touches to the picture. It should be parallel to the guiding light, i.e. at a 45? angle behind the model, and be as hard a light source as possible to create as much contrast as possible. The reflections in the hair at the back of the head create a feeling for the proportions of the model, as the last unlit areas are brightened up.

A little task for you:
