Why a wireless microphone for video recordings
Whether you are recording an interview or a video where the sound of the actors/speakers is important, good sound plays an important role. This cannot always be achieved with directional microphones, lavalier microphones or shotgun microphones, because in some situations the sound cannot simply be fished or recorded outside the frame. This is where radio links are used, which record the sound in combination with a lavalier or without.
The advantages of using wireless links / wireless microphones
We will go into the advantages of wireless links in more detail here, as it quickly becomes clear why you should use a wireless link:
- Maximum freedom of movement; Wireless microphones allow the speaker or performer to move freely without being restricted by cables. This is particularly important in situations where mobility plays a role, such as interviews, live performances or vlogs.
- Flexible placement in the room; wireless microphones offer flexibility in the placement of the microphone. This is particularly useful when a microphone should not be visible due to aesthetic or practical considerations, such as in film productions or stage performances.
- Reduction of accident potential +amp; cable clutter; The use of wireless microphones reduces the risk of cable clutter / tripping hazards and makes it easier to set up and dismantle audio equipment. This is particularly important in environments where quick and efficient preparation is required. Cables can generate unwanted noise when moved or touched. Wireless microphones eliminate this problem, which is especially important when absolute silence is required, such as in quiet scenes in movies or ASMR recordings.
- Improved audio quality; Wireless microphones often offer excellent audio quality and sometimes have noise reduction algorithms. This helps to ensure clear and professional audio recordings, even in more adverse situations.
- Reduction of interference; Good wireless microphone systems have mechanisms to avoid interference that can be caused by other wireless devices or signal sources.
The most important features for wireless microphones
Now that we have listed and explained the most important advantages of wireless microphones in general, let's look at the most important features that modern wireless systems should have.
- Battery life; You should always keep an eye on this, nothing is more annoying than when the power simply fails during transmission or recording. Many devices also differ in this respect, for example whether a battery is permanently installed or can be replaced, which enables faster maintenance so that video production is not interrupted for long. Some models also have a charging cradle, which charges the devices during transportation from A to B and thus ensures successful recording.
- Gain control; This can be used to adjust the volume of the microphone
- Monitoring; Allows you to monitor the level of the microphone, it indicates whether the microphone is overdriven and the sound is therefore choppy and too loud.
- Internal memory; The memory allows recordings without being connected to a camera, it is recommended to record a clap in the video to synchronize the sound.
- Jack connection; Connection for an external lavalier microphone is always good and offers even more flexibility and sometimes also better audio quality thanks to the connected microphone. Some modern radio links now even have built-in microphones, which guarantee amazingly good sound recording quality.
- Mute button; Especially in live streams or recordings in which another participant disappears from the picture but can reappear at any time, it is a good idea to have an integrated mute button on the transmitter.
- Automatic frequency synchronization; Many radio links offer synchronization of the radio connection between the transmitter and the receiver. This is particularly important if there are many interfering factors in the vicinity of the recording, which can lead to interference signals in the transmission, so the radio link / radio microphone should have automatic frequency synchronization in order to adjust the frequencies during the recording if necessary.
