A classic is back! After Kodak unfortunately announced the discontinuation of the production of all its slide films in 2012, at least one Ektachrome slide film is now available again with the Ektachrome E100.
The E100 is characterized by extremely fine grain, vivid, brilliant colour reproduction and extensive tonal reproduction. Kodak has based the new Ektachrome E100 on the earlier Ektachrome E100 G. However, since certain raw materials required for the E100 G are no longer available, the new E100 differs in some parameters from the earlier E100 G: The reproduction of blue, especially sky blue, has been visibly improved (no more tendency towards cyan, as with the predecessor and as with the current Kodak color negative films).
The new E100 has an overall neutral to slightly cool color balance (emphasis on blue). In direct comparison, it therefore differs visibly from its predecessor E100 G, which was slightly warm in color. The new E100 also reproduces the colors somewhat cooler than the Fujichrome Provia 100F, which has a very precise, natural-neutral color balance.
Thus the Ektachrome 100 with its slightly cooler color rendition occupies an exceptional position in the Kodak color film range, since the Kodak color negative films are all slightly warm (Portra 160) to clearly warm (Portra 400 / 800, Ektar, all amateur color negative films).
The extremely fine grain of the E100 G has been retained in the new E100 (RMS value 8). However, the resolution of the new E100 is unfortunately somewhat lower. The new E100 is somewhat richer in contrast than the earlier E100 G, and the exposure latitude is therefore slightly lower.
In direct comparison to the Fujichrome Provia 100F, the new Ektachrome E100 is slightly cooler (bluer) in color than the Provia 100F. The Fujichrome Provia 100F is characterized by a visibly better contour sharpness, higher resolution (higher MTF) and a slightly larger exposure latitude compared to the Kodak Ektachrome E100. In terms of fine grain, both films are at the same extremely high level.
Zum Glück habe ich mit Fotokoch noch einen Lieferanten von frischen (!) Diafilmen gefunden, wenn auch zu einem sehr stolzen Preis. Es ist zu hoffen, dass Diafilme auch in Zukunft verfügbar bleiben, denn das Dia ist ein sehr langlebiges Datenformat, dass notfalls auch ohne Hilfsmittel gelesen werden kann, selbst nach 50 und mehr Jahren.
