Innovative technologies let you capture fleeting moments down to the smallest detail with fast, precise autofocus. The 425 AF phase detection points combine with AF contrast detection to deliver the impressive speed of 0.02 s11. High-density AF tracking technology is capable of tracking even aimlessly moving subjects.
More accurate low-light autofocus
With the improved AF algorithm, autofocus now works extremely accurately even in low light. The lower limit of the brightness range for AF detection in AF-S mode has been reduced to EV-212 on this model.
AF in focus magnification for more accurate focusing
When autofocus needs to be especially accurate, such as when shooting macro, you can display the area you want to focus on magnified and then select the focus point ultra-precisely in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
Improved real-time eye-detection AF for portrait shooting
Real-time eye-detection AF detects your subject's eyes and automatically focuses on them when you half-press the shutter button. You can select the left or right eye, or set it to auto-select. When AF-C is enabled, focus is maintained throughout, even if the face is partially obscured, backlit, or looking down.
Simplified manual focus with improved peaking function
When using manual focus, the peaking function highlights the most sharply focused part of the image area in color. Blue has been added to the peaking colors of the display (in addition to red, yellow, and white) to improve the visibility of focus peak areas during high-precision focusing for macro and portrait shooting.
Continuous focus of tracked subjects with real-time tracking
Improved automatic motion tracking uses a newly developed subject detection algorithm and takes into account color, pattern (brightness), subject distance (depth), and face/eye information to detect and track the subject without interruption.
Excellent image quality, low noise, and wider ISO range
The maximum ISO standard sensitivity has been increased to ISO 32000 (with expansion to ISO 102400 for stills). In addition, improved imaging algorithms, detail rendering technologies, and range-splitting noise reduction provide more realistic textures, greater detail in shadow areas, and more natural colors, skin tones, and plant renderings.
High-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking
Capture every action with continuous shooting at up to 11 frames per second13 (in after-view) or 8 frames per second14 (with silent shutter) and 8 frames per second (in live-view). Display lag has been kept to a minimum and you can take up to 116 JPEG shots (standard)15 with group display capability. Camera operability and function access during data transfer have also been greatly improved16.
Innovative Image Processing
The 24.2-megapixel APS-C format Exmor CMOS sensor17 provides a wide sensitivity range and reduces image noise to a minimum. Combined with the next-generation BIONZ XTM image processor, it achieves ultra-sharp, high-resolution, aesthetic shots with excellent texture reproduction.
4K movie recording in XAVC S format with high bit rate18
The Super 35mm format and 4K movie recording with full pixel display without pixel binning enable approx. 2.4x oversampling19, as large amounts of data are required for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). This is equivalent to 6K and provides more realistic footage. The XAVC S18 format with high bitrate (max. 100 Mbit/s) is the consumer-friendly version of a professional format. HLG support delivers better movies.
14-bit RAW output for rich color gradations
When shooting in RAW format, the 14-bit signals converted from analog to digital by the image sensor are passed to the front-end LSI and BIONZ X. The images are then processed by the image sensor. There, the images go through 16-bit processing and are then converted back to 14-bit RAW output. This results in smoother, more natural color gradations.

New 1:1 aspect ratio for social media
In addition to 3:2 and 16:9 (width to height) aspect ratios, a 1:1 aspect ratio is now possible, which is common in social media. This eliminates the need to hand-crop your footage for social media posting.
Slow and fast motion21 and high-speed 120fps recording18
You can shoot slow motion (up to 5x) and fast motion (up to 60x) movies in high-quality Full HD and play them back on your PC without any post-processing. In addition, you can create high-quality slow-motion movies from Full HD footage at high bit rates up to 100 Mbps through post-processing.
S-Gamut/S-Log20 footage
S-Log footage gives you the flexibility to create more expressive videos through color shaping during post-processing. The S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves minimize overexposed highlights and underexposed shadows with their wide dynamic range (up to 1300%). The S-Log3 gamma setting also provides an impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude.
Stable, precise AF tracking for better videos
Fast hybrid autofocus provides high speed, precision and powerful tracking to meet the high autofocus demands of 4K movies. AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted for stable focus or fast refocusing, depending on the subject. Touch tracking lets you track motion images by simply touching the LCD.
Interval shooting for time-lapse photography
You can now take continuous shots with a configurable interval between 1 and 60 seconds. The photos taken in this way can be processed into a time-lapse movie on the PC using the Viewer22 application from the Imaging Edge desktop application suite. Simple previews at different speeds let you see what the finished movie looks like on the camera.
Support for professional-quality microphones and audio inputs
Connect external microphones via the microphone jack. You can also use a line input via the XLR connectors with the XLR adapter kit (sold separately) to connect high-quality microphones for professional sound.
Sophisticated features for easy filming
The α6400 makes life easier for professional filmmakers with its comprehensive range of features, including: uncompressed HDMI output, time code/stamp (TC/UB), shot control, marker display/template setting, zebra function, slow motion and fast motion21, simultaneous proxy movie recording, creating and separately saving a still image from a video, Gamma Display Assist, and showing the current ISO value on the display during ISO Auto shooting.
Improve usability with custom functions
You can custom-assign any of the 89 capture and playback functions to the camera's eight buttons and controls. You can also assign frequently used functions to the command dial and the control dial using the personal dial function. The personal menu function allows you to flexibly assign 30 menu functions. With the display of the user-defined settings, you always keep an overview. The menu screen provides one-touch access to help screens.
Seamless OLED viewfinder display
The high-contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-FinderTM provides excellent visibility, fine detail even in dark areas, accurate color reproduction, and seamless display at 60 or 120 frames per second, with the frame rate selectable for a more seamless display. Standard or high quality can be selected for viewfinder and LC display.
180° tilting LC display with versatile touch functions
The high-resolution, 3-inch, 921,000-pixel LC display tilts up 180° for easy framing selection in self-portraits and vlogs. The LCD is intuitively easy to operate by touch with touch pad (for seamlessly moving the focus point), touch focus (for fixing the focus point), touch shutter (for shutter release), and touch tracking (for activating real-time AF).
Simplified rating and delete protection functions
You can rate photos or protect them from deletion. Both functions can be accessed via user-definable buttons.
Better control of white balance settings
A preset white balance can now be locked and unlocked at any time, resulting in more even color tones with multiple light sources. Custom white balance settings have been simplified. You can now set an AWB priority for shooting in tungsten light: Atmosphere for warmer tones or White for purer whites.
Improved user interface for full control over settings
A new feature displays commonly used ISO ranges in the ISO setting screen. Frequently used focus area types are also now displayed in the AF Area Setting screen. In addition, in Flexible Spot mode, you can now move the AF area up, down, right, and left. This is helpful during sporting events when the subject is in constant motion in the AF area.
More versatile flash options
When shooting with compatible wireless flash units, the second shutter curtain sync option23 and slow sync option open up new creative possibilities.
Improved remote control
When shooting remotely with the Remote app from the Imaging Edge desktop application suite, the overlay display now lets you precisely adjust focus and composition via live view on your PC.
One-touch remote control, One-touch sharing, retrievable location information24
One-touch remote control turns your mobile device into a remote control with viewfinder. One-touch sharing lets you transfer photos and videos to your device for posting on social media. In addition, the camera can collect location data via Bluetooth24. (Mobile device features available via Sony's Imaging Edge Mobile app25.)
Robust, durable construction even for demanding conditions
The low-vibration shutter mechanism is rated and tested for 200,000 shutter releases26. Body and top and front covers are made of lightweight yet ultra-tough magnesium alloy. Key buttons and dials are sealed. Body components are made of a seamlessly bonded, dust- and moisture-resistant double-layer structure27.
