Selfies... a type of "photography" that everyone knows nowadays and takes almost daily, without really thinking about the process and the possibilities of creating said self-portrait differently. What did self-portraits look like in the past? Did people snap them just as randomly in everyday life? Find out in this article from the "100 photos 100 stories" series.
Beate Knappe 1964Self-portraits... with a difference!
When looking through Beate Knappe's archive, she was particularly struck by the self-portraits, which have very little in common with the "selfies" of today. Can you imagine that there was a lot of work and creativity behind the "selfies" we know today? The first selfie was taken in 1964 with her first camera, a Rolleiflex 6x6 roll-film camera, and shows her at the start of her training. As you can see: Tripod, shutter release, a roll film and a large camera that have nothing to do with the "selfie gadgets" of today!
Beate Knappe 1983Second self-portrait:
The second self-portrait was taken in February 1983 at the kitchen table in her apartment. In front of her are spools of a JoBo can in which she had probably just developed a 35mm film. In this picture you can't see the camera with which the photo was taken, but it was also taken with far more effort than in this day and age.
