Many ambitious full-frame photographers prefer a zoom lens in certain situations, but do not want to compromise on image quality.
We have therefore developed a standard zoom Lens that meets these requirements and delivers consistently high image quality from the wide-angle to the telephoto range. The new 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM | Art thus fits perfectly into the group of outstanding lenses in the Art product line.
The consistently high speed and zoom factor have been developed with the help of many simulations and optimally combined so that this Lens fits the specifications of a 35mm full-frame sensor, setting a new standard for professional cameras. Ideal for portraits, landscapes and general photography.
By minimizing aberrations through the use of the latest technologies and our know-how from many years of lens development, the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM | Art achieves an amazing imaging performance with a very high resolution, even at the edges of the image. While the focused subject is displayed with a high resolution, the Lens also ensures a soft and natural bokeh. Both a high-resolution reproduction without color errors and a natural bokeh are possible with an open aperture.
Ideally, a fast Lens already has a high imaging performance across the entire image area at open aperture. Sagittal coma, for example, in which the rays of a point light source do not meet at one point but create a tail, is a typical reflex that occurs primarily with wide-angle Lens. The 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM | Art has an optimized performance design due to the positioning of aspherical lens elements on the rear side and the adjustment of the angle of incidence of light, so that a high reproduction performance is already guaranteed at open aperture. Due to the reduced distortion of point light sources at the edges of the image, it is perfect for astrophotography and available light.
Exceptional image quality
In order to achieve high imaging performance, the correction of chromatic aberration is essential. And so the focus was already on minimizing image errors during the development phase of the Lens. The Lens now contains FLD glass ("F" Low Dispersion) and SLD glass elements (Special Low Dispersion) and thus minimizes chromatic aberration, which is mainly visible in the peripheral area when the image is enlarged. In addition, the overall performance design ensures correction of longitudinal chromatic aberrations from the outset, which are difficult to correct later in image processing. This Lens achieves high image quality over the entire focus range, ensuring sharp and high-contrast images.
Minimizing distortion was already an important issue during the development of this Lens. With the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM | Art, the angle of incidence of the light is adjusted directly with the first lens element and each aspherical glass element has been positioned to optimize performance at the respective position. This has helped to minimize distortion across the entire field of view.
With large diameter Lens, there is naturally a drop in brightness at the edges - compared to the center of the image. The improvement in efficiency at large apertures and the minimization of vignetting ensure very uniform brightness. We owe this even illumination from the open aperture for high-contrast images both for indoor shots and, for example, for astrophotography or when photographing the blue sky.
Reflection and ghost image eliminating design
Right at the beginning of the lens design process, we examined the susceptibility to reflections and ghost images in order to achieve an optical design that is resistant even to strong backlighting. The Super Multi-Layer (SML) coating reduces flare and ghosting and delivers sharp, high-contrast images, even in backlit conditions. Individualization and flexible adjustment of the Lens for more comfort or for a special application are easily possible thanks to the SIGMA USB dock and the special software.
Design concept
The new product lines include a rubber coating at the base of the lens hood supplied. The lens caps and AF/MF switches have also been redesigned for improved ease of use. The internal parts, metal parts and the new material called "TSC" (Thermally Stable Composite), which combines well with metals, are arranged so that the products can demonstrate optimum accuracy. The year of release is engraved on the lens barrel so that you can immediately recognize when the Lens was released.
Round aperture
The almost round aperture consists of 9 diaphragm blades and ensures a very pleasant bokeh outside the focal plane of the image.
Fast focusing
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) enables a quiet and very fast AF function. By improving the AF algorithm, the AF is significantly smoother. The Lens also includes a new Manual Override mechanism, which switches to manual focus by turning the focus ring during any type of AF operation. This allows the photographer to adjust the focus quickly and easily. Conventional manual override focusing can also be set using the optional SIGMA USB dock.
Brass bayonet
The Lens is equipped with a solid and precise brass bayonet. The special treatment of the surface to increase strength enables long-term use.
