The back-illuminated Exmor RTM CMOS full-frame sensor with 10.2 megapixels effective (approx.) offers ultra-fast readout speed, high sensitivity, and wide dynamic range. An advanced color filter array delivers accurate color reproduction, while AF phase detection in the focal plane provides reliable autofocus stability and excellent precision. All of this contributes to outstanding image quality.
Powerful Image Processor
The BIONZ XRTM image processor is incredibly fast. Latency has been minimized and real-time processing has been significantly improved. The processor processes autofocus data in real time and is responsible for image recognition, image quality adjustments, data transfer processing, user interface, and other camera operations.
High sensitivity, wide dynamic range
The full-frame 10.2-megapixel configuration provides high sensitivity with low noise throughout the camera's sensitivity range by optimizing the output signal from the sensor. Capture usable images in near-total darkness with an impressive ISO range up to 4096003, and the impressive 15+ stop dynamic range4 allows for beautiful, authentic images without overexposed highlights. Together, the camera's high sensitivity and wide dynamic range allow for greater creative freedom when shooting.
Much-vaunted cinematic color with S-Cinetone
The much-vaunted S-Cinetone look, inherited from the development of the FX9, lets you achieve beautiful images right in the camera. S-Cinetone is optimized for natural skin tones and medium colors, with smoother transitions in bright areas. This allows for stunning subject rendering, as well as powerful camera tuning and post-processing.
4K HFR shooting at 120 frames per second
The high-speed readout capabilities of the image sensor and powerful BIONZ XR processor make full-frame 4K (QFHD) shooting possible at up to 120 frames per second with autofocus. Even at high frame rates, extremely detailed 4K (QFHD) images are captured with full pixel readout without binning for clear post-processed slow motion (up to 5 times slower than real-time). High-precision autofocus offers impressive creative expression and enables beautiful full-frame bokehs even in slow-motion shooting.
Presets and compatibility for custom 3D LUTs with Scene File
The Scene File feature enables powerful color interpretation directly in-camera. Various presets and imports for custom 3D LUTs are available to meet your particular production and style requirements. There are four preset Scene File modes for SDR shooting (S-Cinetone, Standard, Photo, ITU709) and two for HDR (HLG Live, HLG Natural). 16 additional slots support import of 3D LUTs for custom looks, specific monitoring, or color gamut changes.
10-bit HLG image profile
An HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) HDR image profile with the wide BT.2020 color spectrum can be used for direct HDR (HLG) playback on compatible TVs. You get realistic images, close to how the human eye perceives them, with detailed darks and brights and fewer blackouts and whiteouts - all without color correction. In particular, 10-bit images produce fine gradations and details, producing exceptionally realistic results. S-Log3 for improved reproduction of gradations
S-Log3 gamma curves are available, with S-Log3 designed for improved reproduction of gradations from shadows to mid-tones in the gray range (18% gray), providing a better dynamic range of up to 15+ levels. Two color spectrum settings (S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine) are available, simplifying color matching of shots taken with Sony's Cinema Line cameras. Because the colors match, color grading is easier in post-processing when the FX6 is used with other professional cameras.
Capture video with 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 color sampling
The FX6 can capture 4K internally and encode with 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 color sampling when using either Long-GOP or All Intra compression. This allows for even finer color gradation and gives you video with ultimate HDR realism while maintaining natural gradation. This is what true editing freedom looks like.
Different battery types for different applications
The FX6 is compatible with BP-U series batteries. Depending on individual requirements, you can choose between the BP-U35, BP-U70, BP-U100 or BP-U60T. For example, the BP-U35 is ideal for handheld shooting and gets the most out of mobility. The BP-U100 enables longer shooting time when the FX6 is mounted on a tripod or other mount. Thanks to the CHECK button, the battery level can be checked even when the battery is not in the camera.
Internal All-Intra recording
In addition to Long GOP interframe compression, internal intraframe (All-Intra) recording is also supported8. With XAVC 4K intra recording, each frame is compressed individually at a bit rate of up to 600 Mbps. Real-time eye detection autofocus and face detection autofocus
Real-time eye detection autofocus and face detection autofocus are integrated for reliable focusing on people, especially in unpredictable shooting situations such as reporting, events or documentaries. The real-time image processing power of the BIONZ XR image processor automatically and accurately focuses on eyes in a face, whether the person is in profile, looking up or down, or partially obscured. This lets you concentrate fully on composing the image.
Proxy recording for more efficient editing workflows
When recording video, low-bitrate HD proxy files can be recorded simultaneously with higher bitrate formats such as XAVC 4K. The smaller proxy files can then be used for editing and previewing before final editing. This reduces computer load and enables a faster and more efficient workflow. Proxy files are recorded at 8-bit XAVC-L (1,980 x 1,080 9 Mbps MP4 wrapper).
Fast hybrid autofocus for reliable focus when shooting video
Fast hybrid autofocus combines AF phase detection in the focal plane with AF contrast detection. The result is precise and seamless tracking of fast processes, even over a wide range with shallow depth of field. The AF transition speed and AF subject change sensitivity parameters allow more flexible focus control as required by professional users. For both, presets can be recalled during shooting via a user-definable button.
Integrating the powerful electronically adjustable ND filter
The revolutionary electronically adjustable ND filter seamlessly controls the opacity of the neutral density filter from 1/4 ND to 1/128 ND for unmatched creative control and speed. The filter can adjust exposure manually or automatically without affecting depth of field or shutter angle. This allows you to achieve perfect exposure even when switching between different environments such as indoors and outdoors.
Reliable durability and weather resistance in demanding situations
In response to the opinions of professionals, the media compartment cover and port cover, as well as all housing joints, have been upgraded with an improved seal. Potential entry paths for dust and moisture have been re-examined to ensure reliable operation even in demanding environments.
Selecting the AF target with the lens ring
When the AF Assist function is on, turning the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus. This allows for quick subject changes. In addition, the face selection algorithm has been improved. This allows the focus ring to be used to quickly and intuitively select specific people from a group when shooting with real-time eye detection autofocus or face detection. Autofocus turns back on when the focus ring is no longer rotated. This automatically tracks the subject last selected using the focus ring.
Innovative heat dissipation to prevent thermal shutdown
For reliable full-frame shooting in demanding environments with high resolutions and frame rates, the FX6 features an innovative heat dissipation structure. Internal heat sinks have been inserted into the completely redesigned housing structure, and the airflow from the vents to the PCB layout has also been adjusted. If necessary, the camera is ventilated by a quiet fan during continuous shooting at full resolution. Intake air and exhaust air have been structurally insulated for dust and moisture resistance.
Highly durable and lightweight magnesium alloy body
For reliable performance in demanding conditions, the main body, top, front and rear covers, and handle are made of lightweight magnesium alloy. The rugged and durable magnesium alloy main frame offers maximum mobility due to its light weight. The stability of the lens mount is further enhanced by six screws, allowing even heavy lenses to be securely attached.
Flexible HD LCD touchscreen with 2.76 million pixels
The 3.5-inch LC display (1,280 x 720 pixels) is mounted on an extended base and can be adjusted to different angles regardless of camera setup and shooting angle. This makes it easy to monitor video. There are three mounting points on the handle and two more on the body. The touchscreen provides intuitive operation for numerous camera settings, even where camera body controls are more difficult to access.
Smart Handle
The Smart Handle attaches to the top of the camera and provides stable camera control and operation when the camera is difficult to hold on the Smart Grip, such as when shooting from a low angle. It also features XLR connectors, a microphone mount, and a Multi Interface (MI) digital shoe, allowing it to be used with a wide range of professional accessories. For enhanced usability, two user-definable buttons, a multi-select button, and a customizable dial have been added. Accessory mounting is possible via seven holes for 1/4-inch screws. Customizable workflows have also been included: For example, the protective cap for the Smart Handle can be stored inside it, and the body ports can be quickly sealed when the Smart Handle is removed for upgrades.
Smart Grip
The FX6's ergonomic Smart Grip enables powerful and comfortable camera operation, even during extended or dynamic shooting situations. Three user-definable buttons, essential zoom and start/stop controls, and a customizable dial suitable for aperture or variable ND filter control are all easily accessible. The freely adjustable angle of the telescoping handle and Smart Grip can be changed with a single button. This makes it effortless to change positions without interfering with production.
Professional Connectivity
The FX6 has several professional interfaces, including independent 12G-SDI (also supports 3G/6G-SDI) suitable for external 16-bit RAW recording, and an HDMI output for program monitoring. Time code ports (TC IN/TC OUT) enable synchronization of multiple cameras. SuperSpeed USB-C at 5 Gbps (USB 3.2) allows recording data to be quickly uploaded to a computer.
Two XLR inputs and enhanced audio features
The FX6's handle has two independent audio inputs (easily accessible XLR connectors) for external professional microphones. In addition, a UWP series wireless microphone can also be connected via the MI shoe.
Two CFexpress Type A compatible media slots
The camera's two media slots are compatible with CFexpress Type A memory cards and SDXC/SDHC memory cards that support UHS-I and UHS-II speed classes. CFexpress Type A memory cards are the next standard for compact memory with high read/write speeds suitable for recording 4K video at high bit rates. They can quickly clear camera buffers even when large amounts of video data are generated.
Data communication to support local workflow
Network communication features support FTP transfers for video files as well as remote shooting to facilitate professional shooting workflow. 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz wireless LAN connections are supported. Wired connections to 1000BASE-T Ethernet networks are possible with a USB-to-Ethernet adapter cable that plugs into the camera's USB Type-C® port, which supports SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps (USB 3.2).
Metadata for easier editing in Catalyst
Sony's Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare software are ideal production partners for the FX6. The camera records three metadata: Image Stabilization, Clip Tagging, and Camera Rotation.
