Review Sony 16-25 G
Reading time: 6 minutes - April 16, 2024 - by Christina Thomas

Hands On: Sony 16-25mm f/2.8 G

There's news from Sony again: a brand new 16-25mm with f/2.8 aperture. Of course, we took a first look at the new lens. In this blog post, you can find out what it can do and for whom the new lens might be just right.

Size and weight

As part of the compact and lightweight G series, the new 16-25mm is not only particularly small, but also weighs just 409g - and that with a continuous aperture of f/2.8. The SEL 16-35mm f/4 G weighs a little less, but only has a maximum aperture of f/4.
However, if you wanted a continuous aperture of f/2.8, you always had to reach for the 16-35mm GM II. For GM Lenses, however, you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket.

But how does the new Lens actually perform in the practical test?

Image quality

In our short practical test, we had no complaints about the image quality of the new G Lens. We couldn't really detect any image errors. However, we did notice a butter-soft bokeh and a really and more than convincing close focusing distance of 17cm in manual focus. This of course allows flexible use in a wide variety of situations.

  • Premium G-series full-frame wide-angle zoom lens from Sony

  • Luminous intensity f/2.8
  • fast, precise autofocus
  • particularly soft background blur (bokeh)
  • ideal for content creation, photo and video recording
  • dust and water-repellent design

Autofocus

The autofocus is also state of the art. Two linear motors ensure that the Lens can easily keep up with the speed of an Alpha 1 .

Conclusion:

Like the 24-50mm before it, the new 16-35mm is a great solution for anyone looking for a small, compact and, above all, fast "always on" lens with a constant f/2.8 aperture and a smaller focal length range.
With Sony's compact full-frame cameras, such as the 7c II, this is not only a good combination for landscape, architecture and travel photography, but also very suitable for vlogging. Because even with 16-25mm you can do a lot.
