Large pixels for high sensitivity and low noise

Light intensity, wiring, and output have been fundamentally optimized in the new rear-exposed Exmor^RTM 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor. The result is doubled readout speeds, excellent image quality across the ISO range, a wide 15-stop dynamic range, and fewer rolling shutter effects. In addition, the sensor offers AF phase detection in the focal plane.

In addition to the new, significantly faster sensor, the BIONZ XR image processor has also been enhanced to offer up to 8 times more processing power. Outstanding AF Performance Even at 4K 120p

The new Exmor R full-frame image sensor and revolutionary BIONZ XR image processor deliver fantastic detail in space and time with ultra-precise AF active throughout, as well as great 4K video even at 120 bps or slow motion. The resolution and depth of field that only a full-frame sensor can provide enable spectacular results.

10-bit 4:2:2 shooting

Shoot directly in-camera with outstandingly detailed 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 color sampling that make image composition, post-processing, and compositing much more flexible.

All-Intra encoding capability

In addition to Long GoP, All-Intra encoding is also possible. This encodes images individually at bit rates of up to 600 Mbps, more accurately capturing complex motion when recording to internal or external media and making editing workflows more efficient.

Top quality and smaller files with XAVC HS

The new XAVC HS recording format encodes with HEVC/H.265 twice as efficiently as AVC/H.264 delivering higher quality images at a smaller file size (XAVC HS compatible editing software required).

Sensitivity extended to ISO 409600

The premium sensitivity of this series opens up new dimensions with the extended video ISO range of 80 to 409600 (standard: 80 to 102400). More light intensity and the optimized output of the 12.1 MP full-frame sensor ensure low noise over the entire ISO range and good images even in almost complete darkness.

S-Log3 Gamma, S-Gamut3.Cine like professional equipment

The S-Log3 gamma curve and the S-Gamut3.Cine color spectrum have been adopted from professional camcorders. They increase dynamic range and simplify color matching for smoother post-production.

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma)

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) simplifies HDR production by shooting for HLG-compatible BRAVIA TVs on-camera without complex post-processing and with seamless gradations with 10-bit color depth.

Improved image quality

With the new BIONZ XR image processor, color reproduction, stability under different light sources, natural color gradations and roll-off have been improved, and the rolling shutter effect reduced.

16-Bit RAW HDMI output

For demanding post-processing workflows, 16-bit RAW output is possible via HDMI connection to compatible external recorders (RAW video output is full-frame 4,264 x 2,408 [16:9] data from the image sensor with frame rates of 60p/50p/30p/25p/24p and various color spaces). The camera simultaneously captures XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K, or XAVC S-I 4K, as well as proxy files.

Efficient editing with proxy capture

In-camera HD proxies (8- or 10-bit depth) can be created for high-bitrate 4K video. The smaller proxy files reduce computer load during editing, speeding up workflow before final 4K delivery.

Fast, accurate, reliable hybrid autofocus

AF with intelligent tracking and sensor-integrated phase detection covers a wide area of the frame. This maximizes ultra-accurate and reliable AF performance when combined with high-quality E-mount Lenses, even when shooting 4K subjects in motion at shallow depth of field and at frame rates of 120p.

Powerful Focus Control for Single Photographers

With 7-stop AF transition speed and 5-stop AF subject switching sensitivity, you can better realize your creative vision when changing focus. AF can be temporarily activated simply by touching it, even in manual focus.

Real-time eye-tracking AF

Real-time eye-tracking AF uses AI for ultra-precise eye focus and is now 30% better in profile or at partial face occlusion (Compared to models with BIONZ X. Sony's internal measurement.). Eye tracking lets you focus on composition even when depth of field is shallow.

Real-time tracking with intuitive touch operation

Real-time tracking analyzes subject color, pattern, depth, and face data for reliable tracking. Touch tracking intuitively and automatically tracks the subject you touch on the LCD.

5-axis image stabilization built into the Body

Ultra-precise image stabilizer and gyro sensor provide 5-axis image stabilization.

Active mode for handheld shooting

Active mode enhances stabilization for video shooting. For unchanged high image quality, the BIONZ XR image processor precisely measures camera shake and optically compensates for it. This allows for handheld stable video in 4K resolution, even while walking or when a gimbal cannot be used due to lack of space.

Digital audio interface for clear audio

A digital audio interface complements the Multi Interface shoe for direct 24-bit inputs. Possible settings are 48 kHz/16 bit 2-channel and, with the optional XLR-K3M adapter kit, 48 kHz/24 bit 2-channel and 48 kHz/24 bit 4-channel.

Great heat dissipation for high reliability

The image stabilizer incorporates a special Sony sigma-shaped (Σ) graphite heat sink that dissipates heat 5 times more effectively - for longer shooting times without sacrificing image stabilization.

Convenient video shooting

Our pro customers have been asking for a VIDEO button on the top that's easier to operate from different shooting positions - here it is. The mode dial layout and switching speed have also been optimized.

High ISO sensitivity

With its enormous ISO range of 80 to 102400 (expandable to 40 to 409600 for stills), the α7S III opens up a whole new range of creative possibilities. The new image sensor and image processing algorithms render images even clearer and textures even more natural than its predecessor, the α7S II, even when shooting in near darkness.

Fast hybrid autofocus for stills

Hybrid autofocus works quickly and accurately. With 759 focal plane phase-detection sensors and 425 contrast-detection points distributed over nearly the entire image area, the α7S III reliably finds and tracks subjects.

Outstanding continuous shooting performance

Continuous shooting is possible with mechanical or electronic shutter with AF/AE tracking at up to 10 frames per second. Capture fleeting moments with more than 1,000 uncompressed RAW continuous shots (When using a CFexpress Type A memory card).

Ultra-sensitive AF even in low light

With the optimized AF algorithm, the α7S III's autofocus now works even in low light up to EV-6, where subjects are barely visible to the naked eye.

New sensor and processor for higher photo image quality

Image sensor and image processor have been redesigned to improve color reproduction, especially of skin tones, and texture representation in photos.

New HEIF format and HLG image capture modes

The HEIF image file format offers higher image quality and compression efficiency than JPEG - as well as 10-bit color. HDR photos can also be captured in HLG mode for playback on compatible TVs.

Two CFexpress Type A compatible media slots

Both card slots support ultra-fast CFexpress Type A cards for high bit rate recording and fast buffer sharing, as well as SDXC UHS-II cards. Parallel and relay shooting is also possible.

Convenient video shooting with adjustable LCD

The 3.0-inch, 1.44 million-dot touchscreen flips open for flexible positioning and a clear view even when used with a gimbal or rig.

Electronic HD viewfinder with 9.44 million pixels

The resolution, contrast and color reproduction of the new electronic viewfinder are unsurpassed in its class (Sony mirrorless digital camera study July 2020). It also offers world-leading 0.9x viewfinder magnification, a diagonal 41° field of view, and a wide 25mm eye relief.

The menu has been restructured based on feedback from professional photographers and videographers. Camera settings are now arranged more intuitively and the camera responds better to changes in settings.

Intuitive touch operation

The menu display can be controlled by touch and playback by swiping and finger zoom. Touch operation during recording has also been improved.

5-GHz Wi-Fi compatible

In addition to 2.4 GHz connectivity, Wi-Fi® connectivity at 5 GHz is also provided for remote operation, wireless preview, and faster, more stable data transfer of photos and videos.

LAN cable connection

A USB Ethernet adapter cable can be used to establish a 1000BASE-T LAN cable connection via the camera's USB Type-C® port in complex, interference-prone environments or for higher bandwidth requirements.

Remote preview and recording

Wired and wireless remote recording via PC or mobile devices is possible with Imaging Edge ^MobileTM for efficient workflows and recording in demanding conditions.

Exceptional image quality of the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM

The Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is equipped with three aspherical elements, one of which is an extremely precise XA (extreme aspherical) element, as well as an ED glass element. Chromatic aberrations are thus reduced to a minimum to ensure excellent image quality throughout the zoom and aperture range. Photos are sharp and contrasty from the center of the image to the edges.

Reliable autofocus

Thanks to the Direct Drive SSM, autofocus is fast, quiet and absolutely precise, whether shooting stills or video.

Beautiful, soft bokeh of the SEL2470GM

The aperture of the SEL2470GM is composed of nine blades. It is not dependent on the zoom range, so it delivers great results even in low-light conditions. The bokeh is natural and circular throughout.

Outstanding workmanship

At just under 14cm in length and 886g in weight, the Sony SEL 24-70mm f/2.8 GM tends to be of the more bulky variety. However, this is backed up by the absolutely top-notch metal build quality, which contributes to the robustness and longevity of the standard zoom.

Other features of this standard zoom

In addition to dust and splash protection, the standard zoom is equipped with an AF-MF switch, a focus hold button, and a zoom lock switch. The zoom ring as well as the focus ring are both equipped with a grippy, ribbed rubber coating.
