What should I look out for in a vlogging camera?

A camera that is suitable for vlogging has a number of functions that make it easier for you to work with / create video content. These include some of the following functions:

  • Swivel display / folding display
  • Sensor stabilization
  • Face / eye autofocus
  • Future-oriented video resolutions such as 4k, 5.7k or 8k
  • Generous video formats & codecs for color profiles

Other aspects that are crucial when buying a camera: how heavy is the camera and which accessories make sense in this context?

Which accessories for a vlogging setup?

A good accessory for a vlogging camera is a handle or a small gimbal. A flexible tripod as well as a small external microphone for many cameras. Why an external microphone? Good sound is half the battle for a successful vlog.

Tips for better vlogs

  • Have fun talking in front of the camera and pass on your fun and enjoyment to your viewers
  • Be close to the camera for good sound and users on mobile can view you better than if you are just a small dot in the video
  • Avoid loud and annoying noises such as street noise
  • If you use background music, make sure that it is not too loud and dominant in the video
  • Make sure the video is a good 10-15 minutes long
  • Zoom into your image by walking towards the object
  • Try to have the sun at your back if possible
  • Look into the lens. It can help if you first look at the camera's brand logo

Which lens / focal length for vlogs?

Most vloggers like to use a very wide-angle lens, be it a super / ultra wide-angle or a normal wide-angle lens. Our go-to recommendations here are the classic 16-35mm lens and a 24-70mm lens. The advantage of a 24-70mm lens is that they are usually available at affordable prices. Whether as an F/4 or an F/2.8 variant. Another advantage is the weight and the focal length itself, from wide angle to a light telephoto lens. This is combined in this lens.

Costs for a vlogging system

If you first want to find out whether vlogging suits you, you can also start taking your first shots with a smartphone. We recommend the use of a smartphone gimbal. Of course, the quality of cell phone videos is not yet sufficient to justify paid advertising cooperations. (Unless we are talking about Instagram stories or reels) If you want to film in high video quality, you also need a powerful PC / laptop to edit the video material without frustration and then export it quickly later.
