Guide to the best compact cameras 2024

The best compact cameras

When you think of a compact camera, you might think of a Leica Q, Ricoh GR or Fujifilm X100, but there are many more cameras that can be described as compact cameras. The compact camera looks back on a long history in which many brands were represented. The renewed interest in compact cameras is partly due to the social media platforms TikTok and YouTube, where some compact camera models are enjoying great interest.

What criteria should I consider for the compact camera

Have you decided not to take your photos exclusively with your smartphone? That's good, but it also means that you should ask yourself a few questions first so that you don't regret this decision!

Do you want to zoom?

A zoom has many advantages, but it also has a significant disadvantage. Most compact camera zooms do not have a continuous aperture, which means you lose some flexibility when shooting in the dark or if you want to crop something in particular. A fixed focal length limits the photographer, but offers great potential for creativity and cropping.

How big and heavy should it be?

A camera for your trouser pocket? Or should the camera hang comfortably on your wrist? For example, we love to have our camera hanging at our side with a strap/rope. That way we can always get to the camera quickly. Which is super practical, especially for street photography!

Do you only want to take photos or also film?

Perhaps the most exciting question you can ask yourself at the moment is what you want to shoot with your camera, is it "just" photographs or do you also want to shoot videos, such as behind-the-scenes content, which is becoming increasingly relevant for social media.

Do you want to edit your photos even further?

Do you just want beautiful snapshots? Or do you want to have finished images with a look directly in your camera? Many cameras offer different options and individualities here.

Our selected top compact cameras

We start with the three great legends that we teased at the beginning, because they are clearly on this list!

All compact cameras

Fujifilm X100VI

The Leica Q for those who don't want to buy a Leica! The new generation of the x100 offers technology from other Fujifilm cameras in the usual compact body. This includes sensor stabilization, an electronic ND filter, the sensor with 40.2 MP and the improved autofocus. But what makes the camera so attractive? Among other things, the viewfinder, because it is not only for looking through, but can also be switched to a digital display like a system camera. As usual with Fujifilm, the camera has been awarded the film simulation feature, which simulates the analog classics (films), resulting in photos that are already processed in the camera.

Our conclusion

The market for compact cameras has changed in recent years, but as soon as you do a little research and get to grips with the different devices, you will find the strengths in the details. Cameras with interchangeable lenses are certainly more popular, which is due to their greater flexibility and specialization, but compact cameras are interesting for anyone who can live with the possible limitations caused by the compromise of a fixed Lens.
