Reading time: 10 minutes - January 31, 2022 - by Isabella Tabacchi From the Schnappschuss
We are used to living with the warm colors of the sun. As soon as it shines, we go out, walk and hike or take photos. Who wants to live with the light of the moon? I do! Especially when the moon surrounds and illuminates my favorite landscapes with its light.
Isabella Tabacchi - Alpe di SiusiThe cool light of the moon
Under the cool light of the moon, you have the feeling of experiencing the opposite of daytime. But sometimes, when the nights are very, very cold, I even have the feeling of being warmed by the white light of the moon. Maybe it's because the eternal companion of our planet has been considered by people in religion, art and literature since the beginning. To me, however, she seems like a friend, a mother, when I sit on the ground, observe nature and immortalize her in my photographs.
Isabella TabacchiExpressing emotions
I am Isabella Tabacchi, a landscape photographer from northern Italy. My photography and art are the result of my need to explore nature and capture landscapes from my personal point of view. My passion officially became a profession in 2017 and I started collecting many international awards such as Photographer of the Year at the Moscow International Photo Awards 2020 and 3rd prize at the International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. For the past four years I have been a judge at the Epson International Pano Awards as well as various competitions for Hasselblad, the Italian government and many others. I am also Hasselblad Hero of the Year 2021 and brand ambassador for F-Stop.
I am always looking for new ways to perceive different environments and pay special attention to leading lines, foreground elements and natural frames in my image composition. I then optimize the mood of the image to best express the emotions captured.

Schnappschuss 66: Moonscapes - Isabella TabacchiContrasts and dramatic lights
My motifs are characterized by contrasts and dramatic lights, which always inspire me and shape my pictorial style. What fascinates me about nocturnal landscapes and lunar landscapes are the strong contrasts and the mystical atmosphere that moonlight creates in a landscape. Especially on a snow-covered peak, which is why this "Moonscapes" project is a tribute to this special atmosphere for me.
The photos were taken at various locations in the Alps, between Switzerland and the Dolomites, as well as in the Lofoten Islands. I found great conditions in the Swiss Alps, especially in winter, when I photographed the Lyskamm, the Matterhorn or Castor and Pollux during a snowstorm on the peaks. For this, it was important to use a long exposure time, high ISO values and an open aperture, although not as much as for the Milky Way motifs. In fact, the moon illuminates the landscapes very strongly. It is better to compensate for the effect of the moonlight.
The aim of the project
The aim of this project is to portray the emotional scenes that moonlight creates and impresses us with the contrasts it creates. The feelings I have for these landscapes are often very strong. I feel a great energy when I stand in front of them, even if it is a very cold light. A beautiful scene in the moonlight makes me happier than a strong sunset or sunrise.
The project has no particular connection to the locations, but I think that the association between the huge mountains and the contrasts created by the moonlight, as well as the scenery, touch me very emotionally. I hope that viewers will feel the same and see the landscapes through my eyes. In night and landscape photography, photographers often avoid the intense moonlight and hope for a clear sky full of stars so that they can admire the Milky Way. In this project, however, I want to show how breathtaking lunar landscapes can be.
